THE ALBANY DAILY HERALD: THUR8DAY,

On the other side of the Inn the traffic
was as vigorous then as at noonday.
Carriers’ carts creaked up to the door,
and dray loads of squeaking plgB made
other music than the lark’s. Double
chaises, with cushions of red or green
velvet and half a dozen happy villagers
to each (the men all with great china
bowled pipes In tbelr mouths), swung
lazily by, raising a dust, and the lowing
of troubled cows and calves came as
much from the road as from the Illim

historical old manor house (now a mere
dairy farm), whose buildings were
quite concealed by the tall trees that
girdle them.
The Inn damsels, sewing girls, kitch

and a friend or two had now set aside
all the cares of the day and were roll

This is the Inst day of the hunting
season, and it has been a busy one
with a good many gunners in this
part of the country.
In spite of the threatening condi
tions which prevailed last night, a
number of local sportsmen made their
arrangements to begin shooting doves
in various near-by fields as soon as it
should become light enough this morn
ing. There were no large hags made,
if reports are to be credited. The
warfare on the doves has been Inces
sant for the last few weeks, and these
birds are not now found in any con
siderable numbers at any one point.
The quail shooting has been poqr
for some time. As one sportsman ex
pressed it a few days ago, “every
thing that is not under water is burned
off, and the rest is ploughed up.” A
good many snipe have been killed dur
ing the last month, but these birds,
though migratory, will also be under
the protection of the state game law
after today.
On the whole, It has been a very en
joyable hunting season. There has
been less cold weather than the aver
age sportsman craved, but birds have
been reasonably plentiful.
Now the true sportsman, will oil his
gun and put it away, then take down
his fishing poles from the side of the
house.

reason that there were not more was
that they could not be packed and

Most persons who patronize min
strel shows prefer burnt cork artists
because they portray the old-time plan
tation darky to better advantage than
the black man himself. In the enter
tainment last night, however, the ne
gro character was portrayed faithfully
by the negroes themselves. The show
was quite up to date and that it was
clean and refined was attested by the
fact that it was attended by many of
the most prominent theatre-goers in
the city, all of whom appeared to be
pleased.
There is a vast difference in the
price of admission charged by this
company than what is usually charged
by njinstrel companies, .nevertheless,
the show was fully up to date.—Paris
