Most of the newspapers of the state

TAFT.
Decidedly one of the most interest-
tog men to contemporary public life
Is William H. Taft, the big Ohioan
who, after having filled various posi
tions of honor and responsibility,, has
found apparently a perfectly congen
ial berth at the head ot the War De
partment. ■ 1
Secretary Taft to one of the kind of
men who do things. He believes In
taking the bull by the horns whenever
the bull manifests a disposition to be
contrary, and has decided opinions on
all public questions, which he ex
presses with vigorous candor. He to
very close to the President, whose
Confidential adviser he - is and than
whom he to hardly less strenuous to
fighting the frequent fierce battles ot
the administration.
Justice Brown Is to retire from the
supreme bench during the coming
summer, and Secretary Taft could
have thp place thus made vacant sim
ply by indicating his willingness to
accept tt. But the war portfolio is
more to his liking, and he has pub
licly stated that he will remain in the
cabinet unless the President insists
that he don the Judicial ermine.
And should Secretary Taft not re
turn to the bench, he will be an ex-
ceedtogly formidable candidate for the
Republican presidential nomination
two years hence, and should he be
nominated Democracy would find him
a bird' man .to qefeat. Hli) ability fa,
great, his Integrity unquestioned, bis
capacity for work almost unlimited,
and his experience large. On ti)e
tog frqra the standpoint of ^ Demo
crat, that he will, after reflection, ac
cept the supreme court Justiceship,
though the probability is that he will
do nothing of the kind.
THE EIGHTEENTH ASSEMBLY. <
The program of the Eighteenth An
nual Assembly ot the Georgia Chau
tauqua appears elsewhere in this
evening's) Herald.
Ab forecasted several days ago, it
wll) be found to compare favorably
with the excellent programs of past
assemblies. It has-been In process of
preparation for months, and repre
sents tlie best efforts of those who are
charged with the exacting labor .which
such an undertaking Involves.
The uames of many men prominent
as speakers and teachers appear on
the program, aud to departmental
work as well as to the character of
the platform entertainment nothing Is
left to be desired for the assembly of
1906.
While the greate it sntlofaction of
Georgians will be found in the assem
bly Itself, there is much of pleasure
to lie enjoyed In that contemplation
which the publication of the program
niake% possible.
Coal Strike Strategy.
From New York Tribune, March 13.
The primary aim of the miners'
union Just now to to raise the wage
scale In the bituminous field.. The
soft coal operators are resisting an
Increase, but their ranks are divided,
for to the present condition of the soft
coal Industry a strike has little or no
economic Justification. No surplus
stock Is available: the demand for coal
Is expanding, prices are good and
enormous contracts for delivery are
outstanding. To bring still further
pressure on the reluctant soft Coal
operators Mr. Mitchell wants to be in
a position to offer them the tempting
bait of a strike to the hard coal re
gion, with the resulting extension of
the soft coal market and the stiffen
ing of soft coal prices, tt the bltum-
toous operators thought a hard coal
strike was assured they would fall
over each other In their eagerness to
sign a new wage scale with the union.
Mr. Baer and his associates are to
that extent playing Mr. Mitchell’s
game when they give him pretexts for
forcing a strike to the anthracite
field.

CALOMEL FOR’ PEAR BLIGHT.
There are many In Southwest Geor
gia who will be Interested in the an
nouncement that tests that have been
made by a pear grower near Fitzger
ald have demonstrated, to the satis
faction of the experimenter, at least,
that calomel will care pear blight.
By boring a small augur hole In the
tree. Inserting fifteen grains of calo
mel and then plugging up the bole, It
litis been stated that pear trees have
been cured ‘of the blight when they
were so badly alfetced that they were
deemed worthless.
This remedy, according to a Fitz
geralil special to tho Atlanta Consti
tution. was suggested by A. A. Field
to G. S. Smiley, who made a test of
the unique remedy with the result that
on the following year tho trees bore
fruit, and tilts year have apparently
recovered their health and are loaded
with blooms.
The experiment is one that Is easily
made, and there are thousands of
blighted pear trees in Georgia that
would be. gratoful for a dose of calo
mel provided It will do what is
claimed for them.
