Here 1b an illustration of how real
estate values have been mounting up
In Albany of late:
JuBt a year ago a gentleman bought
a lot In Arcadia, containing one acre,
for which he paid $150.
A few ,dayB ago he s'old one-third of
the lot for 6300 cash, and the man
who bought It thought he was getting
a bargain.
The original purchaser of the acre
still , has two-thirds of the lot, which
he can readily sell for 6000. He has
back the money originally Invested,
plus 6130. In other words, the prop
erty has increased in value 600 per
cent, in twelve months.
1 ThiB 1b not an unprecedented or
even an unusual case In Albany. Sim
ilar instances of the phenomenal in
crease In the value of land have been
cited in The Herald, and many have
not been mentioned at all.

Of course our Repair Department is on the jump, but
A little boy, it is said, was sleeping
In a room on the second floor of the
New Albany hotel, wHen It caught fire
several weeks ago. The anxious fath-
er, upon learning of the blaze, Imme
diately rushed to the room to save his
boy. "Get up, son, get up,” he cried;
“the hotel Is on fire!” The little fel
low slowly opened his eyes, and calm
ly asked who was fighting the fire.
"Tom James,” answered the father.
“I am going back to sleep, then,” said
the boy. All of which goes to show
that young as -Arell as old appreciate
the good work of Albany’s chief.
Why the Jew Excels.
Walter Hurt, hi The Culturlst
In almost every field of human en
deavor the Jew exools. There is a
philosophic reasm for this which has
no relation to ossentlal superiority.
The Jew is thorough. He is so as a
result of long necessity. The world
has vainly sought to deprive hlpi of
the means for existence. Ho was
quick' to understand that with merely
equal merit he could not hope for an
even chance. He perceived that his
only promise of survival under the
handicap ,of race lay in superior
qualifications. He applied himself.
He learned to master difficulties and
surmount obstacles. Discounted by
prejudice, he . realized that his work
must carry a premium of value In
order to reach parity In the open mar
ket. Ab the problem grew more dif
ficult hlB capacities Increased propor
tionately, for Nature responds unfail
ingly to every demand of Necessity.
