Washington street, from Broad to
North, Is paved.
Fact!
There Is a little cleaning up to do
at various points along the line, and a
bit of patching here and there where
defects in the work have been discov-
ored, but the Job Is practically com
pleted.
Sing four stanzas, please.
All together, now: let all sing. One,
two, three
"Praise etc.,.etc.
The city authorities have notified the
officers of the Southern Concrete Con
struction Co. ttfat it is desired to close
up the whole paving matter at once.
A request has been made that the com
pany have Its qualified representatives
In Albany on Wednesday for a final
reckoning, and if no hitch develops the
final payment on the paving contract
will be made at once.
It has required nearly six months to
accomplish the paving Job. It was
thought when the contract was let that
the work would bd done In half the
time, or less, hut there has been delay
after delay, and the consummntlon ot
a work in which the whole community
was interested was repeatedly de
ferred.
But now the agony Is over.
The three blocks from Broad street
northward on Washington are paved,
and Albany knows a whole lot about
paving that she didn’t know before,
dhe paid a price for the knowledge,
hut It will copie la handy with a value
all Its own In the future when similar
undertakings are on foot.
The owner of a fast trotter may now
go a-cllpptng oyer those three blocks
ot paved street with the music ot his
horse's hoofs ringing In hts ears.
When he gets to the end ot the vitrified
brick he may. If he likes the fnuslc,
turn about and drive back. Otherwise,
the music will cease.
After a while we will, of course, have
more paying done, though for the pres
ent there will he no more undertak
ings of this character.

COMMITTEE NAMED TO
DECORATE AUDITORIUM.
One of the important matters in con
nection with every assembly of the
Georgia Chautauqua relates to the dec
oration of the Auditorium. Every year
a competent committee It appointed by
the Chautauqua management to look
after the decorations, and the atten
tion thus bestowed is responsible for
greatly improving the appearance of
the Interior of the building.
This year the matter has been placed
In the hands of a competent commit
tee, President A. W. Muse having ap
pointed a committee of three, com
posed of Miss Annie Hobbs, Mrs. J. P.
Gill and Mr. Frank Smith. This com
mittee will have entire charge of the
decorations.
Albany can, not take care of new
comers until she provides houses for
them to sleep In. People want to
come, and will even make reasonable
sacrifices to that end, but they can
not be expected to camp la the streets
or vacant lots Just for the sake 'of be
ing called Albanians. There are scores
of families anxious to move to Albany
from other places, but there
houses have been built during the last
few years, and many more are being
and will be built, but there are no Indi
cations that the supply will keep pace
with the demand. The demand Is sim
ply growlng-the faster.
