Atlanta, Ba:, March 30.—On the eve
qt his departure for home yesterday
Corporal Tanner, commander-in-chief
of the Grand Army of the Republic,
who has been in Atlanta attending the
Wheeler Memorial and convention of
the Blue and Gray, made a very sen
sational statement.
"If the Republican party," said Cor
poral Tanner, “continues to slap at the
Grand Army men, as it has been doing
recently, I would not be surprised to
'see the next national House of Repre
sentatives.' controlled, by the Demo
crats.”
This statement was made anent the
fight being led by Chairman Tawney,
of the apporprlatlon bill, to have all
civil employes removed from govern
ment service who have reached the
. age of 70 in 1913. Corporal Tanner
declares that if this provision in the
bill is adopted it will mean the dis
charge from employment of many Con
federate veterans who are in the ser
vice.

REMEMBER
any way interested in the'organization
certainly should feel encouraged. Not
only this, but the people of the city
have cause to congratulate themselveg
upon having such an organization to .
fight their fights. It seems that every- j
thing the league has touched has
turned into gold. The league went
after the improvement and extension
of the Central yards, something that
had been talked about for months,
and forthwith the contract was let, |
and the ground was broken. The
league went after the express ser- j
vice on the Albany & Northern, be-1
tween this city and Cordele, some-,
thing which had been clamored for
for months, and the-road's officials and
express officials met, came to terms,!
and in a short while the service will j
begin. The league went after the riv- \
ers and harbors committee and after j
it had practically been definitely set
tled not to visit Albany, the commit
tee came. The league went after the I
new B. & W. schedule, and yesterday
a now one was announced. And so
with many other things.
