YOUR CHILDREN’S EYES.
Many parents are culpably negligent
ot their children’s eyes, early attention
to which would very often obviate life
long annoyances and possibly Injury
to physical health.
If a child of yours complains that
ho can not see clearly, that he has dull
pains In the region of the eyes, or that
he Is subject to headaches; or If he
leers, looks at objects askance or with
partly closed eyes, he Is suffering from
Borne detect of vision, and it is your
parental duty £o at onco consult an
oculist, lest your negligence or Indif
ference may result In permanent In
jury.
Always have your children’s eyes
examined before sending them to
school.
The examination of children’s eyes
calls for special tact, ns well ns pro
fessional skill. It they do not need
glasses, I will tell you so.

DRESSMAKING HINTS
A Few Reminders for Brave
Daring Amateurs.
and
Loosely-woven materials, or those
which are likely to fray easily, arq
often a source of trouble to the Inex
perienced dressmaker, for, however
much Is allowed for seams, the threads
aer apt to become unraveled almost
down to the seam stitches. To remedy
this the raw edge should be overcast
directly the garment is cut‘out, before
any seam Is sown up. By this means
the necessity for wide turnings is
avoided. 'i • , V
Sleeves which are full at the top
or are fashioned with a puff should
always be made over a lining for a
good fit to be Insured and the fullnesB
to be kept In a proper position.
• * •
If a sleeve Is made with a long cuff
of lace It Is best to mount it over a
lining oT white satin, but it a trans
parent effect is wanted chiffon should
be used for the lining, as it makes the
arm look much whiter underneath,
The same rule applies to a lace yoke.
If you wish to make a walking skirt
juBt to clear the ground, without ap
pearing too short, adopt the follow
ing plan: Measure the person from
the waist to the ground and deduct
one and a half Inches.
Where a very accurrate straight line
fs required, the material should' not
be torn or cut, hut a thread must be
drawn first to act as a guide before
cutting.
From the New York Herald. -
When the Man Who Had Been Mar-
rled ljefore took unto himself a second
wife he laid down for her guidance
just one rule deduced from his pre
vious matrimonial experience.
"Neither of us,” he said, “will ever
meddle with the other’s letters. I shall
never think of opening your letters,
and you, of course, will observe the
same respect for my correspondence.”
And wife No. 2 said she would. It
was because of that post-nuptial agree
ment for each to respect the epistolary
rights of the other that wife. No. 2 was
so worried about a certain telegram.
It was addressed to the man. A tele
gram, In her opinion, meant sudden
death. She wanted to-know who had
died, and for the first time In her life
was tempted to open a communication
addressed to her husband. Being a
woman of strong will, however, wife
No. 2 promptly subdued that unholy
desire and Bet about satisfying her
curiosity by more legitimate mlans.
She took the telegram to the Man's
office. He waB not In. Her next move
was to telegraph to his mother and
brothers and sisters in Chicago.
“Is anybody dead?”, she asked.
"Wire Immediately at my expense.'
Within three hours the answers be
gan to arrive.
“Nobody dead. Why do you ask?’’
Wife No. 2, then pat (Several tele
phone wires Into commission. About
3 o’oloek one of the clerks In the office
located the Man In Yonkers.
“Say, Bert,” he said, “there Is some
thing doing up at your house. Your
wife has been looking for you all day.
It must he serious business. She has
been In telegraphic communication
with your folks in Chicago.”
The Man, at the other end of the
wire, turned pala
“Good heavens l\’ he cried, "what’s
wrong? I am Just about to close this
deal, but I’ll chuck it and hurry down
as fast as trolleys and trains can take
me.’’
It was 6 o’clock when the Man Who
Had Been Married Before came home.
His wife met him at the door with
the telegram. '
“Read It,” she said. “I am nearly
frantic with anxiety.”
The Man opened the envelope.
“Well, I’ll be blessed!” he said.
“Why didn’t you open it yourself?"
“How could I,” she retorted, “after
what you Said?”
“But the telegram Is yours,” said the
Man. "It says so, as plain as day.
You dldnt’ read straight. I sent it
myself, early this, morning. I told you
I had to go to Yonkers and might not
be back till late tonight." /
“And Just to think,” sighed wife No.
2, "that I spent $2.90 to find out-
that.”

In stroking gathers, the needle
should be held In a sloping direction,
and not upright, or it will pierce
through the material and Weaken It
considerably. '

As a rule, the warp threads which
run the length of a material are
stronger and more firmly woven than
the woof threads, which run from
selvedge to selvedge. Remembering
this, all parts of a bodice which are
likely to stretch, such as sleeves, col
lars and yokes, should he cut the
length of the stuff.

If a material has a pattern running
one way only, care must be taken
when cutting out a blouse that the
two fronts do not have the pattern
going In different directions.

And the poorer one Is the more
steadfastly should one turn from shod
dylike materials. Fine, firm weaves
are Invariably cheaper In the end than
poorly and loosely woven fabrics, how
ever well they may look at firet.
