foibles which mnke him so unpopular
at home ns this one.
A man Is sometimes horn unpopular,
and sometimes he has unpopularity
thrust upou him, but If he wants to
achieve unpopularity with a bound just
let him forget the date of his wedding
day and allow his wife to find It out.
Wo know a man who Is occasionally
greeted upon his return from business
by his wife dressed In her best gown,
with a rose In her hair and a smile ou
her Ups.
The man Is always courteous, and so
he greets his better half kindly, even
while he asks In a tone of distant dis
approval, “Are we going anywhere to
night, dear?"
“Going anywhere!" says that lady.
"No; don’t you—is it possible you don’t
remember what today Is?”
The culprit makes a valiant effort to
recollect He runs his Augers through
bis hair and assumes a thoughtful look.
He knits l)ls brows and bites his lips,
and he Is painfully aware all the time
that bis wife Is growing more and more
rigid and more and more sorry that she
has assumed her best gown for an oc
casion that Is so little appreciated.
“I know It Isn’t our wedding anni
versary,” says the head of the house
presently and pleasantly, “for-we were
married In the spring. I am sure we
were, for you wore some sort of white
thing. It was very pretty," he adds
hastily, Immediately aware that the at
mosphere has grown even cooler with
bis remarks.
“I wore a'gray going away gown,"
says his wife Idly, “and nothing white
at all.”
. “it Isn’t the anniversary of our en
gagement,” go^s on the blundering
masculine, “for you told me last year
'that come some time In June.”
His wife absently takes the Sower
out of her hair und crushes It.
“Tell me what It Is,” commands the
man Impatiently. “I’ll never guess It
by myself.”
His wife leads the way Into the li
brary with an air. “It's not of the
slightest consequence of course,” she
says bitterly. “I was very, foolish to
remember It myself, but somehow I
did. It has been four years today since
I met you at Mrs. Blank’s theater
party, and you sat next to me during
the performance of ‘Romeo aud. Juliet'
and said that so long as you lived you
would never forget that night nor the
privilege that had been yours on that
occasion.”
It would be a very hardened criminal
who would not be bowled out by this 1
naive recital, and the man In the case j
Is properly contrite aud writes the date
dowu'in his pocketbook so that he will
have It for next year, but he never by
any chance remembers It then, and
about tho same scene will be gone over
again.
The woman who cannot recollect that
Columbus discovered America In 1402
or that the civil war was begun lu 1801
can remember without difficulty the
day and date upon which ,she met her
husband, the day he Arst brought her
a bunch of violets, the Arst time he
took her to the theater and the play
they saw, the moment when he begau
<to look upon her as something more
than an attractive girl, the time he
asked her to marry him, what be said,
what she said, what hour of the day It
was and what she had on. As for the
wedding day. each detail of It Is as’
plain to her half a century later as If
It had been yesterday.
Then she gets raging mad because
her beloved cannot follow her In her
flights of fancy.
Once there was a mdn who never re
membered until he was reminded that
the anniversary of his wedding day
bad rolled around again. He found
that his misconduct greatly hurt the
feelings of his wife, and so one year
he resolved to make a great mental
effort and be the Arst to speak of the
occasion.
He made the effort, he bought his
wife a superb purse, and he had it
marked with her Initials In gold and

THE STANDARD YARD.
That in. Use In Great Britain and the
United State*.
The yard Is the British and American
standard of length. Down to 1824 the
original standard of Britain, from
which ours was copied, was a rod,
which had been deposited In the court
of exchequer, London, in the time of
Queen Elizabeth. In those days all
measures Intended for general use
were taken to tho court ot exchequer
to be examined by tbe proper officer.
That official took the proposed meas
ure and placed It parallel with tbe
standard and If found correct placed
certain marks pf Identification upon It.
By an act of parliament . In 1824 the
old Elizabethan standard was super
seded by another, which had been con
structed under, the directions of the
Royal .society sixty-fpur years previ
ous. This act provided that “the
straight line of distance between the
centers of two points in the gold stuijs
lu the brass rod now In the custody of
the clerk of the house of commons
shall be the genuine standard of the
yard measure In Great Britain.” The
act further privlded that the measure
ments of the rod must be made when
the temperature of the brass was at 02
degrees F.
The standard was destroyed by Are
in 1834, and the commission appointed
to replace It made, tho yard measure
now lu use. Tho new standard was de
posited in tbe bouse of parliament In
1806,, add authenticated copies of It

Work of the Suit Diver* In Thin Des
olate Watte.
Tbe awful desolation of the Dead
sea, which lies nearly 1,300 feet below
, the level of the Mediterranean, Is bro
ken here and there by tbe salt divers,
I whose work le probably as ancient as
the human race itself.
| From remotest antiquity tbe salt ot
tbe Dead sea has been collected aud
taken to tbe Jerusalem market, where
It Is used for curing hides and for do
mestic pul’poses. Deud sea water con
tains over 25 per cent of solid sub
stances, of which 7 per cent Is chloride
of sodium, or common salt.-
Tbe Dead sea contains no living crea
ture. Sea flsh put Into Its waters speed
ily die. Not a single boat navigates its
Btrange waters, nor Is there any sign
of Ufo, save the Isolated parties of salt
divers, who scrape and slowly amass
their gllstenihg heaps of crystal near
the mouth of the Jordan.
When a sufficient cargo Is made
ready a long string of camels crosses
' the desert, and the salt Is loaded up
Into panniers, or-“shwerrles," and tak
en Into Jerusalem, where It finds a
ready market
Salt, as is well known, has been used
as currency from time Immemorial,
just as bricks of tea are used today In
central Asia, especially In the border
land of Obina and Siberia.—Technical

And was his wife pleased at this'
delicate compliment?
Not she.
“It’s lovely,” she said, “but what Is It
for? The date, 1 mean."
“For?” asked the man mildly. “Why,
for our wedding day. Don’t you re
member we were married on Oct. 6,
1808?”
His wife smiled a sad, soft smile.
"It was very sweet of you, dear-
very sweet," she murmured and her
tone was the more sorrowful than
angry, ‘Tint as It happens we were
married on Nov. 20. I don't know the
date you have there at all.”
Tbe mail was awfully embarrassed,
and he never told his wife, for there
were limits to her patience, that be
finally recalled the fact that on Oct 0,
.1898, he had formed a bnslncss partner
ship which bad ended disastrously.—
