What W« Know to it Certainty Abort
the. Planet*
We know that the yeari of Mara, al
most twice as long as ours, aro com
posed of 686 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes
and 41 seconds, and surely nothing
need be more precise. We know also
that the duration of day and night, or,
to speak more exactly, that of tlio diur
nal rotation, Is 24 hours, 37 minutes
and 2& 86-100 seconds, We know fur
ther that ajnce the Inclination of Its
axis of rotation Is 24 degrees 62
minutes the seasons there are Benstbly
of the same Intensity as upon our
planet Besides, with our own eyes
we see the polar snows melt during the
summer and reappear In the winter.
Furthermore, we know very exactly
the geography of this neighboring
globe, and Ini this respect there, Is hard
ly any more mystery for us than In Its
calendar. We bare observations and
detailed drawings of Its continents, Its
seas, Its streams, Its Islands, Its capes,
the mouths of Its great rivers and Its
canals—there Is not, one might say, a
single point upon' the surface of Mars
which has not been the object of per
petual Btudy on the part of various ob
servers. .
' Still further, we know also the den
sity of this globe as well as the In
tensity of gravity upon Its surface, and
these are two dominating elements In
the organisation of Its living residents.
The whole globe of Mars, which has a
diameter of about half that of the
earth (628 thousandths—6,728 kilome
ters op 4,281 miles) weighs only 106
thousandths of our globe, or 026,684
qulntllllons of kilograms. The density
of the materials which compose Mars
Is Inferior to that of the substances
which compose the earth In the propor
tion of 711 to 1,000. If we compare
this density- with that of water, for
example, we find that the meandonslty
of the earth Is five and a halt times
(6.60) greater than that of water, or,
In other words, our globe weighs five
and one-half times as much as a globe
of water of the same dimensions. But
Mars weighs not quite four times (8.91)
as much as a globe of water of its di
mensions. Its component substances
are, then, less dense than ours.
Once more, gravity there Is much
less powerful than upon the earth, In
the proportion of 876 to 1,000-that Is
to say that a mass of 1,000 pounds
transported to Mars and there weighed
by a spring balance would weigh only
876 pounds and that a man weighing
160 pounds upon the earth would weigh
only 60 pounds upon the surface of the
neighboring globe. Here we have ab
solute data, demonstrated mathematic
ally and Indisputable, data with which
Imagination has nothing whatever to
do.
As Fighters of Badgers They Bays if*
Canine Canals.
The good natured, philosophic Ger
man dachshund lins always been re
garded os more or less of a Joko ’In
this country. Bren In the fatherland
he Is a staple for jesting. His elongat
ed body, his crooked legs, his animated
tall, his resemblance to a sausage—
Who could fall to make some sort of
Joke about a dachshund?
But the dachshund bns a very seri
ous side and a work In life.
“Dachshund'' means "badger dog."
Now, the badger Is an animal that,
generally speaking, needs neither game
laws nor sympathy, because he Is able
to take care of himself and fight his
own battles.^ Naturalists place him as
a link between the bear family and
the weasels. He has about all the
strenuous characteristics of both, with
some of his own In addition.
Badger baiting was formerly a bar
barous rustic sport that drew trade to
country Inns and taverns; A badger
was placed In a barrel, and the man
whose dog could bring him out got a
prize. A single dog seldom did It. A
full pack might—sometimes. The
badger Is a tremendous burrower, and
the Jolly dachshund of the. Jokes bos
been trained for centuries In-Germany
to go Into his burrows like a ferret aft
er rats and drive the badger out or
fight him. In some German and Aus
trian cities there were formerly badger
baiting tourneys In which crack dachs
hunds entered a pit with an able-
bodied badger and fought for points.
It Is said that such contests are still
held in Vienna. For spirit, endurance
and agility the dachshund 1 has no peer
In this work, and a bulldog pitted
ngalnBt a badger would probably find
himself cutting a poor figure.'
So, make the Jokes about the dachs
hund If you will, but gtvo him credit
for his prowess and for that gentle
ness, characteristic also of the best
bulldogs, that makes both an affec
tionate companion to man and a loyal
playmate to children. Give the dachs
hund credit, too, for lhtelllgence. He
'has It In large dogree. Few dogs are
keener.—Now York Press,

COIN CURIOSITIES,

A Great Variety of Materials Has
Been tleed For Money.
Among the early Roman copper coins
was one that weighed nine and one-
halt ounces and must have proved In
convenient small change tor the Ro
man matron when ahe went shop
ping. China of , all countries, ancient
and modern, exhibits the greatest vari
ety In the matter of coins. The earli
est money on record, about 2000 B. 0„
consisted of shells and cowries. The
cowry was used far small change,
while tortoise shell nnd purple cypraea
shells, the latter ranging In size from a
few Inches to a foot and n half In
length, represented money at A higher
▼aide. A decrease In the supply of
shells and Increasing prosperity called
for a more handy medium of exchange,
and cash, the coin with a square hole
In the center, came Into existence and
remains In use to this day.
Among the earlier Chinese coins was
one of porcelain about three-quarters
of an loch In diameter and a quarter
of an Inch thick, bearing the legend
“Eternal Prosperity.” A very curious
knlfo money was at one time used In
the state of Tsl. It was of copper
shaped, like a- bill hook, about seven
Inches long and fitted at the end with
n ring. During periods of metal scar
city In China Iron, lead, tin, baked
earth, grain, silk and shells have been
usid as n circulating medium.
In Japan an Iron coinage, begnn
about 1030, has existed up to the pres
ent (Jay. A curious coin made of a
mixture of silver and copper was long
In ubo In Japan. It varied In size from
a small pea to a large boan. Dead
coins wero also used there for five cen
turies. Glass was employed as a sub

Beards and Bald Beads.
If you do not wtmt to be bald refrain
from growing a beard. It Is a simple
recipe for keeping your hair which a
physician of eminence offers. His the
ory Is that men who are bald Owe their
afillctlon most often to the wearing of
beards. He does not pretend to Bay
why this should bo so,-but merely di
rects the notice of any observant per
son to the fact that .nearly every man
who rejoices In a luxuriant growth of
whiskers has a deficiency of hair on the
top of Ills head. On /he other hand,
most clean shaven men posseta good
heads of half. Many men who are
clean shaven In earlier life permit their
beards to grow when they have reach
ed middle age. In consequence (If tlio
theory of the physician quoted be cor
rect), the hair begins to fall off the top
of their beads. It Is a fatal mistake.
Tho frequent and regular use of n ra
zor Is the best Insurance against bald
ness. It would seem, says- this physi
cian, as if nature could provide for the
support and nourishment of only a cer
tain amount of hair. If a beard Is
grown, the crop on tho scalp suffers.-
