resolution providing for the election
of senators by direct vote of the peo
ple has been favorably acted on by the
house committee on elections. The
resolution also provides that the terms
of emmbers of the house shall be four
years, Instead of two. Both proposi
tions’ are to be accomplished by
amendments to the constitution. The
reason for lengthening the terms of
house emmbers Is stated to be that no
party can Inaugurate a polloy In two

Atlanta, Ga., April 12.—Rev. A. C.
Ward, pastor of the Temple Baptist
church, and State Senator Hamby, of
the Fortieth district, appeared yester
day before the State Prison Commis
sion to press the petition asking for
a pardon for R. A. Keith, of Atlanta,
who Is under a life sentence for kill
ing B. E. Wall In 1901. Keith claimed
Justification, alleging that he slew the
destroyer of his home. Mayor tyood-
more than ordinarily anxious that Al
bany corral a winning line-up and de
velop a degree of baseball enthusiasm
which will know no such word as' fall.
Manager Thomas has been in Al
bany for the last few days, and has
talked over the prospects with the lo
cal fans. He finds a growing Interest
In baseball, and feels satisfied that
Albanians will begin to turn out as
soon as the ‘‘play ball” flag Is run up
on the local field.
Arrangements have also been ef
fected, as the result of which the rail
roads running Into Albany—or most
of them—will run special trains Into
this city for the accommodation of
those In nearby towns who will care
to come In to witness the games. This
will be a great thing for Albany base
ball.

until the ninth inning. Atlanta made

and a brass band kept things lively In
the grandstand.

Emperor Francis Joseph Washes the
Feet of Paupers.
Vienna, April 12.—In the presence
of a large gathering of court, diplo
matic and military officials, including
the charge d’affaires and other at
taches of the American embassy, Em
peror Francis Joseph today performed
the ancient Holy Thursday ceremony
of washing tl)e feet of twelve aged
paupers. The ceremony took place In
the Hofburg, and the emperor was as
sisted by ten archdukes. At the con
clusion of the ceremony the emperor
presented each of the aged men with
a bag of silver coins.
