period covering a quarter of a century,
which furnishes some striking evi

the top of the list In progress and en

Prussia In 1876 was 40.7 per cent., It
has shrunk to 36.2 per cent by 1901.
In the German empire ns a whole the

A similar story, with some slight
variations up or down, Is told by tho
figures of Austria, Switzerland, the
United Kingdom, the United States,
France and other countries. In all qt
them the tendency Is downward, and
the decline seems to be proportionate
to the degree of prosperity In the
countries mentioned. In the United
States It strikes practically all ele

generation. The Irla)i, Germans, Ital
