A portion of the chain-gang swept
off .the vitrified brick pavement of
Washington street yesterday after
noon. This will add materially in
keening down the dust. All over the
dtv strenuouOUpfforts* are being made
against the dust nuisance. And truly
they are needed. A shower now
would be appreciated to the fullest.
But the Indications for one are not
very promising. The skies are clear
and ns hard looking as adamant But
doubtless the people of Albany and
their visitors will survive. The weath
er does not detract In the least from
the folks' enjoyment of the Chautau-

Why the Devil Kina Cloven Hoofa.
Legends of the devil nre quite com
mon in Ireland, but the one which is
most Interesting und least known per
haps is that which tells why the prince
of the Infernal regions has split hoofs,
like those of a cow beast. Moore al
ludes to the legend In his story of St,
Kevin and Kathleen at GJendalough.
In that story Moore makes St Kevin
throw his former ladylove over the
cliff In order to be rid of her Importu
nities, but the peasants of the Glendo-
lough district give the story a more po
etical touch. They Insist that It was
not Kathleen that was thrown over
the cliff, but that it was Satan, who
had assumed the form of the lady in
order to tempt the saint. The moment
the prince of evil toppled over the edge
of the yawning abyss he spread his bat-
like wings and sailed away In safety,
much to the surprise of the holy saint.
Later on the devil again attempted to
lay a snare for St. Kevin, but the saint
managed to get the arch fiend on holy
grouud, where, of course, he was help
less. While the devil was In this help
less condition Kevin sawed off his legs
and attached cows’ hoofs to the
stumps. Since that day Satan has been
cloven footed nnd will be until the end
of time.
