Why the South Carolina
Senator Doesn’t Go to the
White House Any More.
The Washington idea that the pres
ident’s invitation to attend a social
function Is a command doesn’t obtain
with Senator Tillman, of South Caro
lina. The senator doesn’t care how
often the president Invites him to
come up to the White House and have
a bite and a smoke and meet some
nice people; he Isn’t going, and he
doesn’t care who knows It. The presi
dent, it is said, Is anxious to re-estab
lish friendly relations with the sena-

tor, more especially since they are
working along similar lines with re
spect to railroad rate legislation, and
the senator is In charge of the bill in
the upper house. But, while the Caro
linian is willing to co-operate with the
president in that matter, he will not
break bread with him or visit the
White House.
Relations were not always so
strained between these two strenuous
gentlemen. At one time, so it is said,
they felt something akin to admira
tion for each other, and it was the
senator’s practice to g6 to the White
House along with other members
whenever custom required .it. That is
how matters stood at the time of the
visit of Prince Henry of Prussia to
this country several years ago. It
will be remembered that the president
gave a dinner in honor of the prince.
Senator Tillman was among those
who received cards. Some days be
fore the dinner the sensational en
counter between Senator Tillman and
Senator McLaurin occurred on the
floor of the senate. Senator Tillman
acted on the defensive; but the presi
dent concluded that he couldn’t invite
to meet the prince a man who had en
gaged in a fisticuff in the sacred cap-
itol, so Senator Tillman’s Invitation
was recalled. The fact , that It had
been recalled was published through
out the country, to the senator’s hu
miliation and indignation.
From that day to this he hasn’t set
foot in the White House, and he says
he doesn’t propose to do so again. The
incident, by the way, in part explains
the bitterness of some of the criticisms
of the president that the senator has
uttered in the senate.
