The petition of J. F. Hanson and
C. C. Williams, of Bibb County, and
A. R. Lawton, W. A. Winburn, H. C.
Cunningham, T. M. Cunningham, Jr„
T. S. Moise, W. D. Beymer, H. W.
Johnson, and George H. Richter, of
Chatham County, Georgia, showeth:—
First. That the names and resi
dences of petitioners are as above
stated.’
Second. Petitioners desire to form
a railroad corporation to be known as
Georgia Central and Gulf Railway
Company, for the . purpose of building
a railway from Albany, in Dougherty
County, Georgia, to and through Quin
cy, in Gadsden County, Florida, and
to Apalachicola, in .Franklin County,
Florida, or to a point near thereto.
The line will probably run through the
counties of Dougherty, Baker, Miller-
and Decatur, Georgia, and Gadsden,
Leon, Liberty, Wakulla, and Franklin,
Florida. The length thereof, as near
ly as can he estimated, will be, in
Georgia, about seventy-five (75) miles,
and in Florida about ten (10) miles
from the Florida state line to Quincy,
and about seventy-two (72) miles from
•Quincy to'Apalachicola, making an ag
gregate length of railroad in Georgia
and Florida of about one ii’ndred and
fifty-seven (157) miles.. The general
direction in which It is to run from
Albany is a little west of south.
Third. They desire that said cor
poration shall continue for one hun
dred and one (101) years; that It shall
have a capital stock of Ten Thousand
Dollars ($10,000), consisting entirely
of common stock, with the privilege of
increasing the same from time to time
as provided by law, and that prin
cipal office he located in f^va’/iah, in
Chatham Countv. Georgia.
Fourth. Petitioners do Intend In
good faith to go forward without de
lay to secure subscriptions to the cap
ital stock, construct, equip, maintain
' and. operate said railway, and have
given four (4) weeks’ notice of their
intention to apply for this charter by
the publication of- this petition , f " P°,®

advertisements are published in each
of the Georgia counties through which
said railway will probably run, once
a week for four weeks before the filing
of this petition. •

the name and style of The Georgia
Southwestern and Gulf Railroad Com
pany; the length of said road, as near
as can be estimated, will he One Hun
dred and Fifty-Five (155) miles, and
the general direction of said road will
be in a Southwesterly direction from
Dawson, Georgia, and Albany, Geor
gia.
2nd.—The Counties through which
said road will probably run are Ter
rell, Calhoun, Dougherty, Baker, Mil
ler and Decatur Counties In Georgia,
and Jackson, Calhoun and Washington
Counties in Florida.
3rd—The principal places from
which and to which said Railroad is
to be constructed aie from Dawson,
Georgia, ar d Albany, Georgia, to some
point on the Gulf oi’ Mexico in Cal
houn or Washington County, in Flor
ida.
4th.—The amount of the proposed
capital stock shall be Three Hundred
Thousand Dollars ($300,000), and said
corporation is to continue for One
Hundred and One (101) years.
5th.—The principal office of said
Railroad Company is to he located In
the City of Albany, Dougherty County,
Georgia.
6th.—Petitioner^ do intend in good
faith to go forward without delay to
procure subscriptions to the capital
stock and construct, equip, maintain
and operate said Railroad.
Wherefore, petitioners pray that af
ter the proper notice has been given of
their lntentloh to applj for this Char
ter, that they be Incorporated undsr
the laws of Georgia as The Georgia
Southwestern and Oiulf Railroad Com
pany, with ail the rights and privi
leges of such corporations.

There will be sold, at public outcry,
on the first Tuesday in June, 1900, at
the courthouse, in said county, be
tween the usual hours of sale, the fol
lowing real estate situate in said coun
ty, belonging to the estate of Mrs. A.
M. Tift, deceased, to-wit:
All that tract or parcel of land in the
city of Albany, in block 9, in what is
commonly known as Arcadia, or North
Albany, more fully described as fol
lows: All the right, title and interest
of said deceased In and to that part of
lot No. Eighteen (18), in said block 9,
indicated by a map prepared by Louis
D. Wilcox, city engineer In and for the
said City of Albany, in April, 1900, and
which lies between a line marked "pro
posed street” and one marked "right
of way,” the latter line being the west
boundary of the right of way of the
Central of Georgia Railway Co. This
description being-made in connection
and accordance with the map herein
before referred to, and which map is
now in the possession of C. W. Raw-
son, mayor of the City of Albany. The
sale will continue from day to day,
between the same hours, until said
property Is sold. Terms cash.

Boston, Mass., May 25.—With mind
keenly alive and unimpaired by the
march of time, Rev. Dr. William Howe,
founder of the church that afterward
became Tremoit Temple, and be
lieved to be the oldest living Baptist
clergyman, observed his 100th birth
day today at his home in Cambridge.
Dr. Howe continues (o enjoy .won
derful health. His mind is as clear
and vigorous as ever. He can talk in
a niost Interesting way about present
or past events. For the Baptist de
nomination, with which he has been
all his life connected, he preserves a
high regard.
Bom in Worcester, May 26, 1806,
Dr. Howe was ’ educated at Amherst
Academy, Colby College and Newton
Theological Seminary. During his ca
reer at Newton he had become deeply
interested in mission work in Boston,
establishing a Sunday school in a sail
loft on Charlestown street, from which
later grew, the Merrimac Street Union

sions .during his years of mission work
in Boston and out of them ultimately
grew four strong churches.
Dr. Howe has long taken a deep in
terest in Spellman Seminary, in At
lanta, Ga., a colored educational insti
tution. He has given largely to the
seminary, erecting a chapel in honor
of his wife. Until nine or ten years
ago he was in the habit of paying an
annual visit to the seminary.
Atlanta, Ga., May 25.—Just now
Georgia Is in the clutches of a most
pronounced dry spell, and reports from
various sections of the state indicate
that the cropB, weakened by a siege of
bad weather, are in a precarious con
dition. Whatever rain falls.in the im
mediate future will do a world of

teresting program for the entertain
ment of the state association next
week. Some changes have been made
in the program since it was first pub
lished, hut they have been for its im
provement.
