THE COUNTRY INDICTED.
Yesterday’s Associated Press dis
patches to The Herald told of the re
turn of Indictments against eighty
people by the Federal grand jury at
Nashville which has been Investigating
the alleged Fertilizer Trust. These
Indictments, It appears, are directed
at individuals and companies In vari
ous parts of the country, Including sev
eral Individuals and companies In

Georgia.
Last night’s dispatches from Nash
ville bring the following additional
particulars:
Nashville, Tenh., May 25.—The fed
eral grand pury which has been Inves
tigating the alleged fertilizer trust for
the past four weeks, concluded Its In
vestigation yesterday atfernoon and
returned In open court this morning
an Indictment against about .eighty fer
tilizer manufacturers, Including a num
ber of local men. The Indictment con
tains six counts, detailing in specific
form alleged violations of the anti
trust laws and charging the defend
ants with combining and being en
gaged In a trust or combination.
The defendants live In various parts
bt the country, where fertllzers are
manufactured, and certified copies of

the Indictment will be sent to the vari
ous districts in which the defendants
reside and there served. The defend
ants will be required to execute bond
for appearance at the October term of
court in this city, where the cases are
to be tried.
The grand jury examined during the
Investigation 140 witnesses and the
Indictments returned Is a voluminous
document.
The attorneys for the defendants
were present In court this morning
when the Indictments were returned,
and Immediately after they held a con
sultation as to what should be the
course to pursue in regard to their
clients. -
Four weeks were taken up on the In
vestigation, and during that time 140
witnesses were examined. The cost
of the investigation was about $7,500.
Six Counts In Double 8erles.
The six counts In the indictment are
In a double series of three each. The
first charge the defendants with con
spiracy: the second charge the de
fendants with conspiracy; and the
third with conspiring under section
5440, revised’ statutes, to commit the
offense of engaging In a combination
as defined by the Sherman law.
The punishment under section 5440
is two years In prison and a $10,-
000 fine.
The third count is new in form and
proceedure. It charges the commit
ting of an offense against the United
States by engaging In a combination
In restraint of trade, as defined and
prohlbted by the Sherman act.
The style of the cage on the docket
Indictment is ‘‘United States vs. Vir-
ginia-Carolina Chemical Company et
al.,” and the indictment is described as
"an Indictment for violating act of con
gress approved’ July 2, 1890, and en
titled an act to protect tfie trade and
commerce against unlawful restraints
and monopolies,” and section 5440- re
vised statutes, United States.

Announcement bas been made by
the Southeastern Passenger Associa
tion of a rate on all lines of a rate
of one fare and a third, pluB 25 cents,

The Central of Georgia Railway
makes a further concession, announc
ing the beginning of sale a day earlier
and adding a day to the final retiiru
limit—from the 27th to the 1st, both
dates Inclusive.

means that the attendance will be

which there remained any doubt.

Mrs. W. W. Johnson Dies at Sylvester.

Johnson regret to learn of the death
of their mother, who passed away at
Sylvester at” the advanced age of 78,
The Worth County Local of yesterday
brings the following account of Mrs,
Johnson’s death:
Yesterday the angel of death called
for Mrs. W. W. Johnson at the home
of her son, Llhu Johnson, on Isabella
street. Mrs. Johnson was 78 years
old, was a woman of rare Christian
graces, and loved by all who knew
her. She leaves five children—Mrs.
T. J. Pinson, Mr. Llhu Johnson, of this
place; Messrs. J. W. Johnson, of
Acree; H. W. and J. A. Johnson, of
Albany. The remains will be Interred
in the Pine Bluff cemetery today.
