NEW ORLEANS COTTON LETTER,
By wire to Clark tfc Co.
New Orleans, June 5, 1906.
Opening prices In the foreign mar
ket were decidedly reassuring and
seemed to reflect a keen appreciation
of the government's report, hut later
the trade became imbued with the
bearish sentiments that the American
markets continue to express, and op
tions lost point after point, Anally
closing 3 to 5 points lower than Frt
day’s levels. Spots sales showed a
marked curtailment, only 5,000 bales
being sold, hut at an advance of 3
points.
Exactly upon what basis the trade
figures yesterday’s report as bearish
Is somewhat difficult of conception for
the condition estimate of 84.6 is slight
ly below the average of the past ten
years, while there Is nothing In the
average Increase of 6.2 to justify any
reckless selling on the part of the
hears. An average yield on the acre
age planted would be less than tl?e
requisite 12,000,000 bales and the rec
ords of past seasons prove that fully
as many have produced less as have
yielded more than the average, while
on the other hand with the advent of
a change for the worse In the weather
(and It Is not reasonable to assume
that the excellent conditions that
have hitherto prevailed can be pro
longed Indefinitely) crop accounts will
become less glowing and Induce suffl'
dent buying to bring about a good re
action.
With this consideration In view and
the fact that the world's consumption
shows a steady Increase with the cul
mination of each year, there appears
little cause to justify seriously lower
prices for some time to come, but In
the meantime the character of the
weather Is the Influence of the mo
ment and may be expected to cause
fluctuations sufficiently broad to In
duce Increased market interest.
Yours very truly,

Liverpool operators evidently put a
very bearish construction on the acre,
age report. Sales of 5,000 bales were
the smallest In twelve months.
European gossip was to the effect
that American bears, assisted by “their
English cousins,” will, regardless of
technical position, hammer prices-
much lower.
Our opening was unchanged, hut
selling orders from “The Texas Boll
Weevil Section” quickly sent prices
10 down.
Buying orders ndvance the market
and selling orders bring about the de
spised decline. At the moment the
South might be said to he bearish to
a man.
