PHYSICIANS
BEGIN WORK
Of Investigating Climatic Fevers—Will
Cover the Entire State South of Fort
Valley.
Drs. IT. F. Harris, F. W. Sclmauss
and L. T. Patlllo, of Atlanta, are In
Albany for thb purpose of Inaugurat
ing investigations of certain types of
bllmatlc fevers. Their work will Cover
the entire lower portion of the state,
extending from Fort Valley to the Gulf
of Mexico and from Brunswick to the
Alabama line.
As announced In The Herald and
other state papers some time ago,
these - Investigations are to be con
ducted under auspices of the State
Board of Health, of which Dr. Harris
Is secretary. The board will defray
all expenses, and to It report of the
result of the Investigations will be
made.
There has for a long time been
doubt In medical circles as to the
character and origin of certain fevers
p^mliar to the South. Whether the
"slbw” fevers are typhoid or malarial,
or of distinctive origin, Is a mooted
question which Dr. Harris and Ills as
sistants will endeavor to answer to the
satisfaction of the medical fraternity.
They will make Albany headquar
ters, but will be in the field most of
the time, visiting various localities
where opportunities may be found for
securing valuable data. They will not
confine their operations to towns and
cities, but will /go Into the country
districts of various counties.
The Gill cottage on Tift street, near
Monroe, has been leased for the sum
mer by the State Board of Health,
and is already occupied by Drs. Harris,
Sclmauss and Patlllo. They selected
Albany as headquarters-on account of
this city’s convcntent railroad facili
ties.

A Trick-Playing River.
From New York World.
The Missouri river is at Its tricks
again. A thousand men started In on
Saturday to prevent It from changing
In Nebraska back to a bed which It
abandoned fifty years ago. There is
no trouble comparable to this of hav
ing a^ river which will not stay put.
Such the Missouri has ever been. On
tills account congress almost resolved
In 1902 never to spend another cent on
the stream.
Earth, money and steamboats the
Missouri has devoured ravenously
within the fifty or sixty years witness
ing Its rise and decline as a navigable
river. Some of the earth It has put
back tn new places. Of the steam
boats more than 200 have been burled
lh the bends between St. Joseph and
St. Louts.

Missouri would run five miles away
from Blair, Neb., now a river port.
The bridge of the Northwestern rail
road would be left spanning a. long
stretch of dry land. But a little thing
like that is nothing to the big stream,
ft has been known to wipe out a 2,000-
aere farm In a night, tn March, 1903,
Its waters encroached on the’ main
street of Wilton, Mo., which was two
miles from the river thirty years be
fore, Above WUton farmers were
growing rich on acres a’dded by the
flow.
Four years ago the erratic river
moved three miles from Nebraska
City, and In 1002-03 It out $1,000,000
worth of laud from farms above
Omaha.
The Missouri has changed state
boundaries and has caused law suits
between states, ■ counties and Individ
uals. In 1892 in a single night It
threw the 1,700-acre farm of A. L,
Beardsley, ten miles south of Sioux
City, from Missouri Into Nebraska.
Down opposite Kansas City It ate up
most of an island which the govern
ment was trying to wrest from a
squatter. In irony the government
gave a deed for what was left. Then
the river put the island back, added to
It and made the squatter rich.
In Its composition the Missouri’ Is
(1 parts sand and mud and 4 parts
water. This make-up gives It local
color and the name of “The Great
Muddy.” It ts about 2,900 miles long,
and in 1850-54, the period of Its prime,
its surface witnessed a strenuous
steamboating life. Later came the
railroads, with their blow to'naviga
tion; later sttll the dwindling of the
great stream Itself In Its upper waters.
