Our new marksman Ool.-.
was out yesterday shooting at
biids. Thinking himself unobserved
ho made no effort at display, When
the -Trite Blue” failed to shootit
was noticeable that he rather jump
ed;but nerving himself for the dir¬
est emergency. he gallantly walked
to the uearest peach tree and with
much energy seized a limb and fir¬
ed frantically at the timid bird, and
honestly the feathers flew, bird and
all. This is not personal, on ac¬
count of above title (Uol) we have

Last week a north bound train
on the state road was pa sing
around a curve in or near Tilton,
when the engineer espied a small
cbild playing on the track. He im¬
mediately gave the alarm, revers¬
ed the engine and all the brakes
were thrown on, but it availed
nothing The child was run over,
horribly mangled and instantly
killed. The little one as soon as
seeing the approaching train en¬
deavored to escape by crawling

Two Spring Place Ppm ting youths
were on their way lrom Dalton
last week, when they spied in a
farm yard by the way, a sprightly,
shrill toned, game chiokpn. Wish
ing to become owners of the dar¬
ing fowl, they hailed tbe mi6ter of
the yard and a purchase was soon
made. They drove on indulging
in excessive immaginative pleasure
over future expectations, when in¬
stantly the valuable prize leaped
from their hands and was seen
wending his way t'ltough the dark
forest. No time v. as lost, on the
part of the boys, and after a btated
race lor more than an hour a cap¬
ture was made, and two young
hearts palpitated with gladness
over their prize and victory.
Down in the Coosawattee hot
toms there is a peculiar mound.
It is composed entirely of clay
atid all aionn I for a half mile is
of sand. Tradition gives no au¬
thentic history of this mound
though nianv think that it was
built by the Indians. It has long
been an object of emsity and in¬
terest, Many are the feet df the
palefaces that have pressed its
chilly clay bosom. Probably seme
have entered its bosom to return
uo more while the wor’d stands,
lor quite reci ntly a company of
tourists wended their way to this
strange spot of earth for the pur¬
pose of making some excavations
hoping to find some valuable In¬
dian relics. They plied their dig¬
ging utensils with great diligence
and energy only tor a short time
when they struck something rath¬
er hard. Aftsr lifting it out they
found it to be the, skeleton of a
large man. Many questions were
asked, many thoughts thought.
Probaly the man was killed years
ago by the crafty, cruel red nun.
Probably ho was killed since the
Indians westward movement.
There is a crime shrouded in doeji
mystery.
