reaching Culbertson ranch, and, having
a driver who did not know the road,
they lost their way. The night was one
of the most terrible experienced this
winter, with the thermometer forty
degrees below zero, accompanied by a
fierce wind. The party wandered for
several hours through the hills and
deep snow, when fortunately they found

«B*. GORDON’S LIFE.
Military Career la Chlaa an* la the
Gem Gordon's life was one of adven¬
ture snd stirring incident. He was dis¬
tinguished for lolly courage and honesty
of purpose, while his brilliant achieve¬
ments in China and the Soudan will
ever hold a place in history. Gordon’s
father was a major-general in the artil¬
lery, and his elder Mother had preceded
him in the profession of arms.
In 1855 Gordon proceeded to the
Crimea, where he served several months
and won distinction for military akin
in detecting the plans of the Russians.
In 1860, when the difficulties with China
assumed a serious form, a large Anglo
French expedition was sent out for the
purpose of bringing the Chinese govern¬
ment to terms, in whioh he was emi¬
nently successful.
When the Chinese subsequently ap¬
plied to the English General for I
trustworthy officer to command the
foreign-drilled contingent, Oapt, Gor¬
don, then about thirty years of age,
waa named, fir almost ail of his en
gagements Gordon found it necessary to
be at the front and often to lead in per¬
son, but he never reoognized danger, and
a shower of bullets was to him no more
than a hail-storm.
Gordon left China in 1864 and re¬
turned to England still a Captain of En¬
gineers. He was given a consular ap¬
pointment Ott the Danube, whence he
was summoned in 1874 to Egypt by the
late Khedive. The new task was a very
difficult and perilous one. He had to
deal in the Soudan with difficulties
whioh were only partially known, while
lie had to reooneile instructions that
were often incompatible with the facts
of the position. For years he toiled in
the cause with unflagging zeal.
In January, 1884, at the request of the
.British Government Gordon undertook
the paeifioation of the Sondan. His ar¬
rival at Khartoum was hailed with de¬
light by the people. At first there
seemed some chance of success, but day
by day the forces of the victorious
Mahdi dosed more relentless about the
devoted city until the place fell ihto
their possession and Gordon’s life was
forfeited in the cause for whioh he had
so long and bravely battled.
Gen. Gordon was fifty-two years old
■he dav before his death.

A Vassar Girl’s Sad Fate.
SHE BLOCKS FKOM HER HOME AND IS
WOUND LEADING A LIFE OF SHAME.
I _
A beautiful girl of eighteen years,
graduated from Vassar College last sum¬
mer and returned to her home in Mar¬
quette, Mioli., where her father lived in
fine style with his family. The father
is the owner of several copper mines in
Michigan and is very wealthy. Soon
after the young lady returned home a
Pittsburg drummer, whom she had met
in Poughkeepsie, turned up ih Mar¬
quette, and after a brief courtship, much
against her father’s wishes, the young
couple eloped in October last The
parents were stricken down with grief,
and search was everywhere made for
them. In December the father heard
that his daughter was in San Francisco,
and thither he went at once. After
some search he found her, but his grief
almost killed him when he discovered
that she waa an inmate of a house of ill
repute. His first impulse was to leave
her to her shame, but the thought of
the broken-hearted mother at home
anxiously awaiting her child’s return,
induced him to take back his now peni¬
tent daughter, and a couple of days ago
they started for Michigan. It was the
old, old story. The drummer bad prom¬
ised to marry her, but, tiring of her after
reaching San Franoisoo, he deserted her.
The lost heard of the drummer he was
in Denver, Ool.
All the News.
A Portland (Me.) gentleman who has
a mania for reading newspapers—a good
kind of a mania to have, by the way—
was astonished on Monday last Jo re¬
ceive an enormous number of newspapers
by mail and express as well as by mes¬
senger. They came from every direc¬
tion and from nearly every State in the
Union. There were papers in all lan¬
guages and all sorts of views, religions,
political, social, and scientific. The
affair was designed by the gentleman’s
wife, and was intended as a joke which
might possibly aid in the reformation of
her newspaper-on-the-brain husband,
f t is feared that the scheme was a mis¬
erable failure, as the gentleman esti¬
mates that he has on hand about 400
pounds of paper, containing wisdom
enough to fit out a dozen Solomons,
and worth, even at old junk rates, a
mug little sum of money.

message of transmittal sayB that a fail¬

the Exposition might reflect upon the
