THURSDAY. MAY )W IHS5.
England.
We find that so far back in
t he history of empires as we
are able to go with any degree
of certainty, there has always
been one nation figuring more
.conspicuously in the affairs of
earth than the rest. And since
the disintegration ot the Ro¬
man empire this position has
been nobly maintained by
p’oud England. In area
only a garden spot, but pos¬
sessing the molt desirable ge¬
ographical position of any conn
try on the globe, Since Will
iam the Conqueror with his
daring army of 60,000 Nor¬
mans, crossed the English chan¬
nel and won the ever memora
ble battle of Hastings in 1066,
this grand old government has
scarcely known u marked de¬
feat, but to the reverse, her
numerous victories render vol¬
uminous the penning? of histo¬
ry. When the iron willed Na¬
poleon sprung from remote
Co sica, skipped the seas to
troubled Fiance, marshalled at
his bidding countless hosts and
by but little effort dethroned
most of the European monarchs,
it remained for England to
,corue to the^ world’s rescue by
driving this manipulator of war
from the contested field at
thundering Waterloo.
For more than eight hun¬
dred yeais England] lias stood
the storms and clash of war;
while many nations have risen,
flourished and fallen, still hei
career grows more eventful and
illustrious each year that
passes.
Just now as. it i? lias been
tliroug all of her past history,
the world is in a great muddle
as to what the fate of this
mighty people will be. The
questions in dispute between
this nation and Russia is one of
quite a trivial nature, conse¬
quently whichever is
will have gained ^nothing] of
very great import Henee it is
that England in her usual sa¬
gacity is acting so discreetly in
the matte". While it seems
that Russia would be pleased
to rush wildly into war, with¬
out considering either the gain
or loss; yet England conducted
by Gladstone sees more clearly
its destructive influences, would
resort to every other means be¬
fore consulting the grim dicta¬
tor of battles; and, whatever
may lie the present outlook,
we predict that the crowned
head in the modern stately
march of nations will never be
overcome by Russia.
