“A stitch in time saves nine.”
About the only idea some people
seem to have, generally overseers
as well as others, is that roads are
to be worked just a lew cUys be¬
fore each term of the Superior
Oonrt, regardless of the weather—
wet or dry, cold or .hot, Besult:
Bad roadej except for a few months
during the summer end fall seasons
It occurs to the writer that a much
better plan would be to comply
with the law in a commonsense
way aud keep up good roads the
year-round with much less time
and labor.
If a stiloh in your gaiment e'
shoo breaks, does not common
sense teach any one that right then
and there is the time to put a atop
to the break by making a “stitch
in time’ and thus prevent
nine at some future time?
then, if the theory be true in
gard to a break in a garment, is
not also true in regard to a
in a road? And it'it shows
mon Bense and an
spirit in the former, does not
same prove true in the latter
It is frequently that a break
pears in a road caused by a
rain filling np and overflowing
side-ditches quite early after the
summer term pf the court, but no
one takes shovel in hand to
the break by a very little
cleaning out the ditches and
up the break in the road. Thus the
road is neglected from month to
month until just before the Spiing
term of court when the overseer,
being prompted by an order from
the commissioners, warns his hands
to meet him on the road at a given
time, to find the road in a desper¬
ately bad condition, and more,
there being so mueh mad and wa¬
ter, that it appears to be almost an
impossibility to work the road to
advantage; it is jnst simply adding
mud to mud making the road, so
far as present travel is concerned,
worse and worse. Now it occurs to
your correspond: nt that a much
better plan wou d be to work a road
when work is needed, and when
the road can be worked to advan¬
tage, and not wait 1'iom one term
of court until the next. Let each
overseer make such arrangements
with his road-hands a3 that, so
soon as it is a knowij fact that
some part of the road needs a few
hours work, some one, two or three,
as the case may be, will go and
perform thr needed work, making
account of their time and report
same, adjusting the arrangement
for the convenience of all the road
hands so ae that every one may
work on that part of the road near
esl to him. Th°8 if a rat needs
filling, a bridge needs reparing, or
it kny part of the road needs drain
ing, or a ditch needs opening, it
conld very easily he done, and by
to doing, a vast amount of time
and labor qught he s^yed to the
hands, And what is better, the sat
isfaption of good rpads might be
enjoyed, by all, ^fter they are once
pot in good condition, and the peo,
pie once get into the habit of
working the roads, semethiug after
the fashion the above suggests

Messrs. Editors: as I have

Mrs. John D. CaiLoun that
had her left ankle dislocated,
is fast recovering. She thinks
she will be able to go home in
in a few days. She has been
confined to her bed at her
mother’s, Mrs. Mary A. Cal¬
houn.
Some of our young men a
bout three in-number, who live
near Ft. Mountain went to see
their best gill last Sabbath
and returning to their homes at
night, di°covered what they
thought was a ghost or ghosts.
One of the young braves re¬
potted that something about
the size of a dog fell out. of a
tiee, another oue of them re¬
ported that some object appear¬
ed to them in the shape of some
sort of an animal with four legs
blowing or making a straDge
noise that frightened the boys
very much, and they succeeded
in reaching their homes after
about a two hours run. As I
fear I will weary your patience
I will dose. W. C. D.
