A If indfall.—ll is said that a worthy farmer in
Norfolk county a few days since, while ploughing
bis field, turned up a stone, which covered the
mouth of a small brick vault, containing a box
filled with doubloons. The amount is said to he
foul teen thousand dollais. As the box wasdecav
ing. the treasure must have remained hidden for
many years, and was probably deposited during
the revolutionary war, or by some privateersman
from the river, on the banks of which the farm is
situated. We are glad that so large a sum of gold
has been brought to light at this time, when specie
is particularly desirable.— Norfolk Beacon.
DIED,
In this County, on Sunday moruir.g last. Mrs.
JANE M- 'TORRANCE, consort of William 11.
Torrance Esq.
Iu Milledgeville on the 12th day of April, .Mrs.
Elizabeth A. Foard, consort of Mr. Thomas
Foard in the62d year of her age.
Iu the death of this estimable lady, the commu
nity has sustained an irreparable loss. She had i
been a member of the Methodist Episcopal j
Church for JI years and lived and died one of its .
brightest ornaments. But a few' hours previous tn j
her death she called her family around her, an I i
whilst she manifested t,;eassurance of her accep- i
tnnee with God, exhorted them in the most af
fecting manner, to fill up the vacancy which she
would soon leave in the Church, and to serve th it
God who comforted and consoled her in the hour
of death.
But she has gone! A husband mourns the loss
of a most affectionate w ife—children, one of the
most tender and exemplary of mothers—relations
her, whose kindness was always ready to admin
ister to their wants. But the orphan !ah 1 the or
phan has lost more than a mother, and many, luf
many who have been snatched from the rude
hand of the world, nursed, educated, and provi
ded for by her benevolence, now weep over her
grave. But alas! why thou’d we mourn! forhlcs
sed are the dead that die in the Lord, and u e ha/e
the fullest assurance that she hasgone to reap h r
reward. Iztmc die the death of the righteous,
■nd let my last end be like theirs.

PRESENTMENTS.
GEORGIA.
In Hancock Superior Court, April Term, 1537.
G,it nett Andrews, Judge.
Me. the Grand Jurors for said county, beg L-ave
respectfully to submit and present the tollowing
matters which have come under our consideration,
in the discharge of our duties for the present term.
We find upon an examination of the records of the
Superior and inferior Courts, that they are iu a
situation which refleets credit oij the respective
Clerks of said Courts. We find upon an exam
ination of the Estray Books, a few cases, where
estrays have been sold and no returns ma le there
of, and also a lew cases where estrays posted have
not been accounted lor.—Upon an examination of
the County Treasurer’s Books and accounts, we
find a balance due on some old fifas and notes, and
in the Treasurer’s account, we Cud a balance due
him of ten dollars and twenty eight cents. Upon
nn examination of the Poor School Fund ; we
find in the hands of the Trustee, an unexpended '
balance of twelve dollars and seventy cents, and j
the amounts paid out supported by proper vouchers. |
We respectfully recommend to the next Legisla- j
tnre a supervision, or repeal of the law passed by ■
the Legislature of 1835, entitled “ an act more el- !
fectually to protect free persons of color,” as wc I
believe that many abuses and injuries may arise I
to owners of slaves under the administration of!
said law.—We present as a great grievance, the I
general neglect to enforce our Road and Patrol [
laws; and we do earnestly request the officers
charged with the execution of said laws, to be j
mure vigilent in the discharge of said duties.
W e present Ransom It. G. Leo, and Louisa '
Thomas, for living in a state of adultery and for- I
uicatioM, in the county of Hancock, and State a-j
foresaid, on the tenth day of April, eighteen bun- |
ilred and thirty-seven, contrary to the law of the :
land and violation of the morality of the commu
nity in which we live. (W ilncss, Thomas Clieely
and Washington 11. Brautly.)
We respectfully tender to his Honor, Judge
Andrews and the Solicitor General, Col. Nesbit,
our thauks lor their attention to our body, and an
express on of our approbation us theii energetic
and lailhlul discharge of their several duties, at
j this term, an I request that these our presentments,

A YOUNG MAN calling himself ? liadius

--ton S. C., came into the neighborhood of BiNh
ville, Franklin county Ga.. sometime in Septem
ber 183t>, and there engaged to teach an English
school for the terra of three months. He was des
titute of clothing pretty much, and informed the
citizens of the vicinity that he was robbed of his
clothing in coming up the country, from Augusta,
by the stage, to Carnesville. The aforesaid Brown
conducted himself so wi II iti teaching the first
school, that every one spoke well of him ; at the
expiration of said school, he made oue for the term
of twelve months, a few miles below, and com
menced teaching, and going in debt to every mer
chant and every money-lender in the country, that
would lend him money.
At the expiration of the first quarter; he col
lected his money, and bought a horse, for which fie
went in debt, and soon after left the country, being
indebted four bundled doilarsor near it.
When he left he was on a good horse, was well
dressed, and must have made a good appearance,
he was seen in Athens, about midnight after
leaving Franklin at dusk, (a distance of thirty
miles.) 'l'lia said Brown we suppose, is near
twenty-five years of age, a good countenance, aud
tolerable easy mr».ner, but makes use of bad En

Vve take this method of informing the public,
that they may l ;ok out for breakers, its we have
no doubt that he will make b '■ way cu to some
