"The friends of the Union are our friends, and its
enemies, our emntiis."
TITESSJAY lUOftNING, OCT, 31.
We must ask the indulgence of our read
ers this week. The publication of the Bank
Reports has obliged us to dispense with our
usual variety. We shall endeavor to make
amends for it hereafter.
CONGRESS.
The extra session of Congress, which ad
journed on the IGth inst., has been one of pe
culiar interest.
So far as the measures of the President
have been carried out, much good has been
done; but above all, the veto which both Hous
es have placed upon a National Bank, we hail
as a signal triumph of the democracy of num
bers over the aristocracy of wealth.
The vast money capital which has been held'
out of active and permanent employment for
years, the hope of con -entrating its power in
one great overshadowing institution, will now
be set to work, and thtough a thousand avenues
will diffuse itself into every ramification of so
ciety. Additional manufactories will spring up
—industry will be encouraged, and labor will
find employment, while the idea of amassing
princely fortunes in a day, will give place to
regular business for reasonable profits. The
monetary system .of the country will become
settled, and expansions and contractions, pan
ic and pressure, .will only be known as things
that were.
These are some of the results which must
flow from the overthrow of a National Bank ;
L-utthereare many others of incalculable benefit.
At this moment, when the mercantile inter
est of the South is making a struggle to break
the northern trammels which have so long
cramped its energy, and to loose itself from the
fetters which have chained it to that section of
(he Union, it is to us astonishing that there
should be one amongst us, in favor of estab
i lishing a great monied monopoly upon northern
and eastern capital, with power to make u,
hewers of wood and drawers of water.
It is the in'crest of the south, to import and
export for themselves.—Their dependence upon
the cities of the north should no longer exist,
and it will be scon, that so soon as the hope of
a National Bank is lost, a large portion of capi
tal now lying dormant, will find its way to the
south—importing houses will be established in
our maritime cities—our produce will go di
rectly from our own wharves to foreign mar
kets, ahd the imports we consume, will return
as directly to our own shores.
In this view of the subject, we think all in
telligent men must shortly unite, if State pride
and self interest have not lost their influence
upon human actions.
If the southern people Iny hold of this subject
in good earnest—if our merchants of capital
and enterprize will put their shoulders to the
wheel, they cannot fail of success. It will be
the interest of the agriculturist to sustain them,
and our commercial affairs, will in a few years
be placed upon a new foundation ; and for a
consummation so devoutly to be wished, all will
unite with one voice.
IVe publish to-day the letter of the Honora
ble John P. King to the editor of the Georgia
Constitutionalist, together with the editor’s ve
ry sensible and pungent remarks.
It is to us, at all times, a subject of sincere
regret to part company with a political friend ;
and particularly with one possessing the quali
fications of Mr. Senator King. But a sense of
duty to the great principles of the party with
whom he has bee n numbered—a party which
has delighted to do him honor—impels us to
the course we have taken.
Air. King was elected to the Senate by men
entertaining the highest confidence in the ta
lents and patriotism of General Jackson, and
whowerc-the zealous supporters of the mea
sures of his administration; men who had sus
tained him throughout in his opposition to the
Bank of the United States; all of which was
well known to Mr. King at the time they placed
him in the Senate of the United States.
In 1832, General Jackson vetoed the bill to
re-charter the Bank, and the act was sustained
with unexampled unanimity by the Union par
ty of Georgia; and in 1833, Mr. King was
elected to the Senate by that party, with a
perfect knowledge of their opposition to the
Bank. He was believed to entertain at that
time, feelings and principles identical with tlio
Union party, who confidently relied upon him
to lopresent them fully and without teserve, as
a Union and Jackson man.
How far this reasonable expectation on the
part of those who elected him has been realiz
ed, is to be found in the speech which he re
cently delivered in Congress, in which be has.
not only openly advocated a U, States Bank,,,
but pronounced a most vi-j’mnt phillipic against
General Jacks'- n a.-jj the measttresof his ad--
ministrat ! on.
Nothing could be more unexpected to the
Ucion party of Georgia. He had b( en more
than two years in Congress before the retire
ment of General Jackson to private life; aid
if he had just cause of complaint against him„
then was the time to speak it out, and not to
treasure up his wrath until the old hero had
closed his public career,
Mr. King should have made known Ifia
opinions in relation to a national Bank, to the
Union party, in the first instance; and thereby
have placed it in their power to be fidly
sented upon the question; and h iving failed to
do so, for nearly four years after that party
I elected him to the Senate, he could not now do
(otherwise, in justice to their feelings and print
