EORGIA FEM ALE COLLEGE—Scottsboro’Georgia.—The
JT Spring term of this Institution, for 1838, w ill open on Monday, !
January Bth. It is desi able that all students should be present at the
formation of classes, on the first day of the term. The government of
the Institution is strict, but salutary—being by w ritten law s and consti
tution, w hich are rigidly enforced, after the manner of tho republican
State Governments of this country. A pamphlet, containing hints c.n '
Female Education, our system of instruction, discipline, &c., w ill i
shortly be published, and sent to all who may feel interested enough
to apply for it, by letter, to the Principal.
The hours for instruction arc from day light till nine o’clock I’. M.
(summer and w inter) reserving four hours for meals and recreation.—
On .Saturdays, students are engaged only till noon. The Lyceum, (a
literary and scientific Society,) of which the Principal is, c.r ofycio, Pre
sident, meet, every Satuiday eveuiug. This society has becu establish
ed but a few months, and has already proven itself to be immensely im
proving to the young ladies.
We pledge ourselves to impart, in one year's time, to any young la
dy, who possesses a good mind, and who can read fluently, a handsome
handwriting, a correct knowledge of Grammar, Arithmetic, Geography
ami spelling.
A married gentleman, from South Carolina, is engaged in the Draw
ing and Painting department. His work will compare with any artist’s
in the Southern States. Besides the above branches, he will teach
Portrait and Miniature Painting. Gilding, Bronzing, Smalling, Trans
feniug prints, Fancy Work w ith perforated paper, &c. &c. lu the mu
sical department, instruction will be given on the piano, guitar, and
flageolet. Lectures every night, on Human and comparative Physio
logy. Botany, Astronomy, Chemestry, <kc. tec.
Exertions are iteing made to have a clergyman attached to ho lusti
ution, which will be ellected w ith as little delay as possible. t\Ve have

ected by the Prim'pal, in the State of South Carolina—optical instru
ments—-Chemical apparatus, maps, globes, &c.
The young ladies are required to dress plainly—-not to wear jewels
of any sort, and not to attend balls ami parties. No store accounts
without the sanction of parents or guardians. Such as have accounts
will be required to register all their expenses in a book, they will keep
for the purpose. Patrons will receive a monthly report of their chil
dren's progress in their studies.
Board can be had in the village.
We solicit the patronage of our Southern friends, and pledge our
selves to labor to deserve it. We nut only invite, but would be flatter
ed by the visits of all who may be disposed to attend our lectuics, recita
tions, dec. on r.ny day or hour during the week.

dorsers, and it being impossible for the board to determine their
responsibility, unless the notes are accompanied with'some evidence of
the amount f property which they possess.
Be it therefore Resolved, That all notes offered at this Bank for re
newal, upon which the endorsers have been changed, must be accom
panied by a certificate of the taxable property of such endorsers as have
been substituted for those on the note proposed to be renewed.

LAWS OF GEORGIA.
AN AC 1 to appropriate monies, and to provide lor the pay
ment ol services rendered in the prosecution of (he war
with the Creek Indians, and for arms and ordnance stores
lost, used and employed in said services, ami for the payment
ol forage and subsistence furnished to said troops, and for
the transportation of the same.
Sectujn 1. I>e it enacted by the Senate and House of Ilc
prcsentatifcs oj the State of Georgia, in General Assembly met,
and it is hereby enacted by the authority if the same, That
all persons who were engaged in the pursuit of any Indians, or
in prosecuting the war against the said ('reek Lillians, who
were never regularly attached to any company, 1 attalion, or
regiment, and who are not, and have not been, included innnv
muster roll or any account that has been heretofore made out
and rendered and paid by the State or the United States, shall
be entitled to have and receive the same pay for their services
as if they had been regularly attached to some company, bat
talion, or regiment, and had been re ularly mustered in tlie
I service of the United States; and it shall be the duty of bis
! Excellency the Governor, to draw his warrant on the Trea
surer of this State for the amount of the same: Provided, the
said account is proven by the aff.davit of the person or persons
demanding payment for the same, and the affidavit of two or
more witnesses accompanying the same, the Comptroller Ge
neral having first audited and passed said account. *
r , Sec. 2. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
I hat all and every person who has furnished military stores,!
either guns, powder, lead, or other munitions of war, to be
used or w as used in the service, or the use of any fire-arms and
munitions that were temporarily used or employed, and there
by damaged or injured by said use, so as to affect ami deterio
rate from the value of the same, in suppressing the hostilities
of the Creek Indians in the late war with the same, shall be
enti'.led to have and receive the reasonable value of sai l mili-j
tary stores, guns, powder, lead, or other munitions of war, so
taken, had. used, or to be used aforesaid; and, also, shall have ’
and receive the reasonable value or amount of anv injury which
he, she or they may have sustained, for the use and damage of
tmx gum’, arms, or munitions of war, used and employed in
said service aforesaid, in the same way and on the same terms
ami in the same manner as prescribed in the fbiegi >m r section i
of this act; and said account shall be proved, audited, and
paid agreeable to the provisions of the said recited section.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid. i
That any and every person who may i ave furnished any per->
sou or persons, as contemplated by lie first section of this act,
with forage and subsistence, during the time they were engag
ed in said service, as mentioned in said section, shall be enti
tled to have and receive payment for the same, upon the pre->
sentation of their accounts, proven according to the provisions
of the foregoing first section, and audited accordingly; Li Ex- i
cellem-y the Governor shall draw his warrant for the san a cb '
the Treasurer, as provided for in the payment of the accounts
in the said first section of this act: Provided, said accounts j
shall not exceed what would constitute the amount of forage
and subsistence o! the same under the rules and regulations ofj
the army of the United States.
, Sec. -L And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
-That any person or persons w ho may have had W atrous employ
ed, and who may have been engaged in the transportation of
forage, subsistence and ordnance stores, in the prosecution of
the service, and for the use ol the troops as engaged in the
service, as contemplated by this act, shall be entitled to have
and receive payment for the same, upon the presentation of
their said accounts, proven agreeable to the rides prescribed in
the first section of this act, and audited as aforesaid in the said
first section ; it shall be the duty of his Excellency the Gover
nor, to draw his warrant in favor of the same on the Treasur
er of this State, who shall pay all warrants drawn under the
provisions ol this act, out of any monies in the Treasury not
otherwise appropriated.
, Sec. 5. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
That his Excellency the Governor be, and he is hereby, re
quested to employ the necessary means to have the monies
hereby paid out, under the provisions of this act, to have the
same reimbursed by the Government of the United States.

AN ACT to appropriate money for the support of Govern
ment for the political year eighteen hundred and thirty
eight.
Section I. Re it enacted by the Senate and House of Re
presentatives of the State of Georgia, in Gem rat Assembly
met, and if is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That
the follow ing sums of money be, and the same are, hereby ap
i propriated for the political year 1838, viz,:
The salary of his Excellenty the Governor, shall be four
thousand dollars per annum.
.ThtMSecretaries ol the Executive Department, not exceeding
three, Welve hundred and filly dollars each, per annum.
The Secretary of State, two thousand dollars per annum,
he Surveyor-General, two thousand dollars per annum.
The Treasurer, two thousand dollars per annum.
The Comptroller General, two thousand dollars per annum.
I he Clerk of the House of Representatives and Secretary
ol Senate, six hundred dollars each, per annum. Provided no
warrant shall issue for the first quarter salary of the Secretary
ol Senate and Clerk of the House of Representatives, until the
Executive shall have satisfactory evidence that said Secretary
of Senate and Clerk of the House ol Representatives, have
respectively made, or caused to be made, and attached to the
Journals of the present session, good and sufficient indices.
The Judges of the Superior Courts, twenty-one hundred
dollars each, per annum.

That to Obadiah Echols, late Surveyor General, fur recording
I one hundred and eighty-four imgranted Head Right Plats, in
obedience to an act of 1835, at thirty-one and a quarter cents
each, the sum of fifty-seven dollars and twenty-five cents; and
to John Brewster, late Surveyor General, for the recording of
! five hundred and fifty-five ungranted Head Right Plats, at
thirty-one and a quarter cents each, the sum of erne hundred
‘ and seventy-three dollars and forty-three and three-quarter cents.

That the sum of ten dollars ami twenty cents, with interest from
the 26th March, 1829 ; of ten dollars and twenty cents, with
interest from the 11th September, 1829; ami the sum of ten
dollars and twenty cents, with interest from 30th August, 1830,
be, anil tlie same is, hereby appropriated to Lewis Dor.vile, for
: money paid by him, on account of Lot No. 574, in the town
• of Columbus, which Lot was'sold by mistake to the said Dow
! die, by the Congnissioners of the. State, when the same had

-1: nd ; two hundred and fifty dollars for M. Sheftall, Jr., .as com
pensation for his services and expenses, as an agent of this State

Sec. 8. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
That the sum of five hundred dollars be paid to ’Viliiam L.
Mitchell, and a like sum to Junius F. lldlyer, as a compensa
tion for their services, in examining the second edition of
Prince’s Digest, in pursuance of Executive appointment.
Sec. 9. And be it further en icted by the authority aforesaid.
That the Directors of the Central Paul., be instructed to pa'
tne appropriations of this act, out ol any current money iu the
Central Bank, without reference 'to the amount of the issues of
said Bank.
Sf.c. 10. And. be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
That the sum of thirty-six dollars ami twenty-five cents, be, and

Walker county, for d mage, cost and Attornies’ fees, in the
case of Robert Benge, an Indian countryman, versus said
Thomas F. Gordon, in Walker Superior Court, September
Term, 1537, for false imprisonment, which said amount was
paid by the said Thomas F. Gordon.
Sec. 11. And be it further enacted I y the authority aforesaid,
That the sum of one thousand dollars, er so much thereof, as
shall be neees-. try for payment of General Daniel Newnan, as
compensation for Lis services as State’s Agent, to the State ol
Tennessee, in compliance with a resolution of the Legislature
of this State, at the rates of five dollars per day, while engaged
in said service, and al the rales of five dollars, for every twenty
miles in going to, and returning from, the seat of Government
in Tennessee, be, and the same is, hereby appropriated, to be
paid out of any money in the Treasury, not otherwise ni pre
printed.
Sec. 12. And be it further enacted by the aidhcrUy aforisaid,
That the sum of fifty dollars be set apart, and applied Ly his
Excellency the Governor, for the erection of suitable shelves,
on which to place the Journals and Laws in chronological ti
ller, and that the smn of one thousand dollars, or so much
thereof as may be sufi-ficnt for the Liuding of twenty coj iis of
each year, of the Journals of both branches of the Lt giskdure
to the present period, to be deposited in the Library.
Sec. 13. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
That ’.he sum of five hundred dollars, or so much thereof, as
may be necessary, be, and the same i-, hereby appropriated to
the Justices of the Inferior Court of Stewart county, to reim
burse the county for such sum as they may have expended and
incurred in the detention and prosecution of Dave Hardage and
oilier Creek Indians, charged w ith the offence of Murder; :n '
tint said accounts be audited by the Comptroller General, and
paid when passed by that officer.

ator from Burke comity, as a balance due him for mileage at
the last Session of the Legislature, a mistake having occurred
in his settlement with the Treasury.
Sec. 16. And be if further enaefed by the authority aforesaid,
That the sum of three hundred and fifty thousand' dollars bo,
and the same is, hereby appropriated, for the construction of
the Western and Atlantic Rail Road.

from and after the passage of this act, his Excellency, the Gov
ernor, shall appoint two fit and proper persons who shall con
struct, and be thmommated a building committee, to superin

central point in this State, that may be deemed most desirable
by the Governor, under the advice of .Medical gentlemen, a
