HII'NES’ PILLS.
ANTI-DYSPEPTIC 8a ANTI-BILLIOUS
Prepared by C. 13. HAYNES, M. ».
SPARTA, GEORGIA.
£3 X offering those Pills t« the , n'dic. it is not deemed obt. u
“ sire or impel tineut to give a brief history of the circum
stances w hich led to their oi iginal preparation. In December.
182.8. Dr. IL took i is sent in Congress as a Representative
from Georgia, w hilc laboring under protracted billion* disease,
the consequence of a sever- attack of fever in ilie course ol
the previous autumn. Having exhausted the usual remedies
w ithout rc’ief, he determined to try the effect «.-f combining a
number of well known medicines, with the separate action of
each he had been familiarly acquainted in his professional
cjmsr-of more than twenty years. These medicines so com
bined, compose his ANTI-DYSPEPTIC AND ANTI
111 LI.IOLS PILLS, lie proceed dto take, as directed for
dyspepsia and other chronic diseases requiring action on the
bowels, one pili at bed lime, which lie coti'inued to repeat
nightly fr-r about a week, at which lime he was us free from
nillious disease a* if he hud never bee i afflicted w ith it. On
his return to Georgia in the spring of 1829, in consequence of
'he signal benefit he had derived from the pills, h. prescribed
them for his brother, w ho bad I een laboring tinder dyspepsia
and liver complaint from the autumn of 1823, in consequence
,of a severe and protracted attack of bi lious fever. His health
began immediately to improve, and h is been restored by them
in the manner stated in ins certificate. The pills were pre
scribed to other- laboring under chronic billions affections,
upon the confidence inspired hy their success in the foregoing
eases, until those cases became so numerous, that applications
were annually made to Dr. II from 1835 to 1838 inclusive,
-then about to depart forW shiugton. fur from twenty to fifty
tozen as a supply during his ab-euce. by persons who
iad tested their virtues. Ho iar. t.o serious tli nght
w as emei t deed i f offering tin rn to the public at large, as the
-upply b id bet n lin.it -d to the range of Ids private practice.
Nor did Dr. H- consent to prepare and offer them for general
use, until two nr three years after he bad been urged to do so,
by those who had bun signally benefited by them. 11 hen
first used by himself, lie suppo*ed their application would be
confined to cases of chronic billions disease, and it was not un
til alter more than ten years experit nee of their use in many
of the varieties of chronic, ami some of the more violent acute
'ebrile diseases, that he.became convinced, as he now is, that
they possess greater merit in all cases requiring either mild or
vigorous action upon the bowels, than any other known rem
edy. As an alterative or mild aperient, tiiey answer most ef
fectively, the indication stated by Dr. James Johnson in hi
admirable woik on tin- morbid irritabi'ity of the stomach and
b >wi Is, hy producing usually ••hut one evacuation daily, and
that «f a solid, rather than a liquid consistence.’’ Nor is it
difficult to account for their thoi/us operon(/i. Mere evacunot*
operate by stimulating the mucous membrane of ttie stomach
and bowels, without affecting tin- organs csrential to healthy
digestion, and although they procure temporary relief, the dis
eased secretions grow worse instead of better. These pills
combine the most g< title action upon tin- mucous coat w ith
>n efficiei t and healthy inflin-nce upon the Itv. rand other or
gaits of the digestive apparatus, and, consequen ly operate in
the mildest mam.er. and not only give prcseiitrelief, but when
steadily persevered in. a perin inent cine.
Not are they less efficient in feverand other acute diseases
requiring active purgation, hy increasing the dose as directed,
causing the double operation of mure vigorous action ou the
fniwels, and proportionably stimulating the liver and olheroi
gatts to more healthy secretions, justifying lhe confident opin
ion, not only entertained by the inventor, lint hy many who
have used them, that they approach more nearly to the char
acter of a universal remedy in the cases indicated, than any
other known medicine
It is not deemed necessary to specify the various disorders
for the relief of which they are applicable, hut the following
■ire enumerated as some of them: Dyspepsia, sick head ache,
liver complaint, asthma, habitual or casual costiveness. Diar
hraa. heart-burn, cholic, sour stomach, billions fever, fenia'c
obstructions, &e.. &c- In short, in every disease requiring
action on the bowels. Nor is it the smallest reconimendatiou.
that in dyspepsia, liver oomplaints, and otherchronie diseases,
a single pill is, generally, a sufficient dose. They are pecu
liarly adapted to lhe condition of all persons of sedentary iia
bits, cither male or female, who. with scatcely a solitary ex
ception, suffer from a sluggish state of the bowels. They are
also recommended as particularly convenient to the traveller
m warm climates, or seasons, and for the use of large fami
lies, the dose being so easily adjusted, especially w hea resi
ling at a distance from the experienced phtsician.
The inventor asks his his own fellow citizens to give the
pills a fair trial—pledging himself if they will do so, that they
will not fail ta obtain the and preference of ninety’-
nine nut. of a hundred, ei nine hundred and ninetynine on
of a thousand As an a'ti rative, or mild aperient, fru- correct
ing habitual or casual torpi lily of the bow els, one pill taken
at bed tim • is the proper dose, without the necessity of chan
ging ordinary habits of living If one should fail to produce
‘he desir' d effect. it is better to repeat it for two or three suc
cessive nights, than to aid its operation by tak.ng any thing
else.
For hiliious fever, or other acute disease requiting active
purgation, one pill repeated every hoar or two. until the de
sired effect is produced, is the best inode of administering ihem
'l’lie subjoined certificates sufficiently attest the eflicacy ol
these pills.
