first used by himself, he supposed their application would be

of the varieties i f chronic, and some of the more violent acute

they possess greater merit in all cases requiring either mild oi

ft c.ively, the indication stated by Dr. James Johnson in hi
admirable woik on the morbid irritability of lhe stomach ami

ilt'licult to account for their modus oprrandi. Mere evacuai ts
operate by stimulating the mucous membrane of the stomach
