!u consequence of the disappointment tve have met with ! Congressional Globe and Appendix will give their conslitu- :
from one o/ our engravers, who was to have furnish 'd one I ents the evidence to enufront them.
January plate, we have heen tinder theuecersity of .sending
onc only a match to what we have formerly furnished. Iiui
having now a number of engravers at work, th it we may
eventually have the plates engraved and printed at least three
month iu advance, w e shall soon be bevoud the reach of a!i
disappointment, aud send iliem to our subsetibe *s so w-i-li
dried and seasoned as to be almost released front (ear of being
injured in the mails by carriage. The plates tie have now
ill hand are such as have never heen produced in any periodi
cal in iIhs con it try, and cannot he surpassed in iht: world; at
' least so says a number ol persons to w hom we have shown
the twelve already selected: and we have not a shadow ol
doubt hut our subscribers will say the saute when they see
them. We also intend to give, monthly, a wood-cut repre
sentation ami description of the latest fashions of Kurone.
1 hese additions will cost us, exclusive ol our present expen
ses, several thousands ol dollars per annum
1 his arrangement, while it will alloni to the readers of the
Mirror more than an abundant equivalent for tile trifling
price at which it is published, (for the plates could uot be
purchased at the print states separately for in r could the
music be obtained for that amount,) will, we trust, give us
such an increase of subscribers as will enable us to proceed
tvith renewed energy and unflagging industry in the pros ecu -
lion of out literary labours, and warrant these heavy expen
ditures of liifte nail money.
When we began the publication of the Minor, there was
no work of a similar character in the Union, of any liter
merit, which combined such a number of attractions as we
have presented in superior engravings, music, beautiful pa
per, aud extreme neatness of typography. With a deteiuii-
itatioti to render it a work worthy of the extensive support
which it has always received, we went on, year after year,
employing talent of a high order, in beautifying and orn amen-
tiug the wotk with gems of the pencil and the pen. Few can
conceive the immense amount we have paid for literary and
pictorial contributions* VVe have beeu the pioneer iu almost
every thing that has lifted fhe periodical pi ess of tiii s country
from its former to its present position, until, by common cou-
seut. the \ew-\ ork Mirror has been considered as inferior to
no literary publication of a similar character in the world.
Me some years since, in consequence of our constantly iu-
■creasiug -expenses, raised the price to five dollars, and out
friends have paid it cheerfully, from a conviction that it is
mow, and always has been, honestly worth the money. With-
iu the last few years a change lias coisie over every tiling,
particularly the republic of letters. Periodicals, have in
creased in vast numbers, and the adoption of the cash system,
mill its certain and prompt results, have induced some few
publishers to reduce the price of subscription, and to be con
tented with limited profits iu consideration of the facilities af
forded them by prompt payment. The subscribers of the
New-Yotk Mirror arc entitled to the full benefit of this change
and we have therefore began a a nkw skiiiks ot the Work
on this second of January, It'll: hut as our inott* is not •‘re
duction of price, and a gradual decrease of excellence,’' but a
ilesire to follow up our seventeen years’ advance, iu all re
spects, and now make the Mirror the most elegant periodical
in the world, we shall make the expensive additions before
mentioned, and continue the charge of only Five Dollars jier
Annum, payable, in oil cases, in advance.
In thus issuing it at a price which would appear tv) all ac
quainted with the subject, scarce y sufficient to defray its cur
rent expenses of print and paper, we do m.l coutem jilate the
least diminution in the interest and value of the |itiblic;iii<>ii.
editorially considered. On tliecotitrary.it will contain//fcra-
ry articles of intense interest; aud every exertion will be made
to furnish the most fashionable, choice, and popular music;
and no pains or expense will be spared to sustain its present
high literary character, and to keep it at least in the foremost
rank with the most popular periodicals iu this country or
Kurope. We even expect in this respect to surpass our for
mer efforts, as the Editor, by a recent arrangement, will be
released front all the cares coutiectcd with the Lusimss and
financial department, which has for years rested upon him,
depriving him of much of the time he wished B> spend iu
catering for the public.
Wt ask, in return, fiom the friends of American liteiature. !
their cordial and hearty support of this New and excessive j
series; and have no doubt hut we shall liberally receive it.
In country towns and villages where the population is small j
iu number, those who wish to receive the Mirror would find 1
it to their interest to obtain at least seven su'>scrihers, that the j
papers may be rolled up instead of being folded, as the fid- '
ding seriously injures I oth papers and plates, but especially
tl»e plates; and less than seven cannot be advantageously
rolled. Where seven or more papers sire sent to one direction,
four dollars for each will lx* received as payment in lull for a
year, lint in all such cases we shall require the name of
each subscriber, that we may know our friends, sit least iu
name, if we should never be more highly favoured. Ifde-
sired, we will write the address, in pencil, on the margin of
each paper so put up.
The Comsrkssios al Globe will be made up of the daily
proceedings of,lie two Houses of Congress, ststd the speeches
of the members condensed. The yeas and nays on sill im
portant subjects sire given. It is published sis fast as the bu
siness of the two Houses affords matter enough lor a num
ber. Each number will coutainwsixtccu royal qunito pages,
of small type- We expect to p^ilidt three numbers for eve
ry two weeks of the session.
Tiie Appendix contains the speeches of the members, at
full length, written out by themselves; and is printed iu the
same form as the Congressional Globe. It will be published phn.-ifi
as fast as the speeches can be prepared by the members.
Each of these works is complete iu itself. But it is desi
rable for every subscriber to have both; because, il there
should lie any ambiguity iu the synopsis of a speech in the
Congressional Globe, or any denial of iis correctness, it may
he removed at once, by referring to the speech in the Ap
pendix.
Indexes to both are sent to subscribers as soon as they can
i>e prepared after ilte adjournment of Congress.
