By observing the following directions, most ol these accidents may be prevented: 1st. Cure should betaken not to use a very w et sponge. If it is slightly dam- pined, it may do no harm; but it is far safer to use the sponge tin/, than when it contains water, for llie water is squeezed out, and remains in the bottom of the bore. On inserting the next catridge, its lower end gets thoroughly soaked, and the wet powder does not burn on discharging the j iecc: but is driven into the bores of the woollen stuff, and forms a kind of match, which not only retains tlie fire, but i- with difficulty extinguished by the sponge; whereas, a dry piece of burning woollen iseasily extinguished, free use ot water in sponging, is the frequent cause ol accidental explosions. sand eight hundred and For pay of" officers, cadets, and musicians, sixty thousand five hundred and twenty four dollars; For the subsistence ol officers, and cadets, forty ; thousand and seventy-seven dollars; For forage of officer.-’ horses, five thousand one hundred and eighty-four dollars; For clothing of officers’servants, four hundred and twenty- dollars; For defraying the expenses of tlie Board of \ isilers at West Point, two thousand dollars; For fin 1, forage, stationery, printing-, transporta tion, and postage, twelve thousand five hundred and eighty-one dollars lbrty-five cent-; For repairs, improvements, and expenses of build ings, grounds, roads, wharves, boats and fences, sev en thousand seven bundled and liftv-seveii dollars and fifty cents; For pay ofadjut pit's and disbursing officers* clerks, nine hundred and fifty dollars; For increase and expenses of tlie library, one thou sand dollars; For progress with binding hooks injured at the fire in February, eighteen hundred and thirty-eight, and imported stitched, tiirce hundred dollars; For miscellaneous items, and incidental expenses, seven hundred and twenty-six dollars and twenty-live cent-; Fertile department of engineering, three hundred dollars; For tlie department of philosophy, eight hundred and eighty-seven dollars thirty-three cent-; For the department of chemistry, five hundred and twenty-five dollars; For the department of drawing, tw o hundred and seventy-five dollars; For the department of m ithematics, severity-five dollars; For the department of artillery; throe hundred and i ten dollars; For completing the reconstruction of the buildings 1 tiui a Hi u Superior Court, •flarcfi Term, 1841. m: g rami Jury, idioscii ami sworn for tliis Court, lie?: leave to stale, tli.it they have disposed of the various duties w liieh devolved upon tin m. and now. at ilie eiose of Isu-iness for the present Term, decline Mitering upon auv subject not imtueilntciy Konneeted willi our eouuiv affairs. \V e congratulate the Court and our fellow citizens, on the auspicious fact, tlint while n ones and misdemeanors are mid ti• >1 yitiir through lfie country under the hard pressure of lie- limes, a spoil ol ([nit l and subordination ^eneralli prevails in our country, am! our court is almost entirely free from new cases of indictment.
