—We are plens* d to state that every
merchant, lawyer, and business man
advertising with us is doirg well in
view of t ie tight timer. We know
this to be a fact, for we visit our pot
ions often to ieam of ihe'r welfare.
The “sin of unbelief” has been a stum
bling block always.
—And now tint. wo are hearing of
shoe and leather factories, stave fac
tories, oyster factories,(?) turpentine

—Among improvements this week
we. ntte tlio Hnr liman house (now Mr.
J B. Habersham’s) thoroughly re-
modchd and being pat in excellent
trim; re-coverii g of barber shop,
McConn’s Hull and D. T. Dunn’s ware,
room; extension of mill house of Cook
Bros.; new residence going np in
Dixville; work commenced on McCul
lough’s office. Let “onward” be the
word
—“Shop lifters” are on the increase.
Two bolts of goods taken from Nel
son's, and an attempt to carry off a
fu'l sack of meal (not paid for) in the
place of a half bushel purchased.
Excuse given—“It'ought dat been de
one wat I buy." Besides these, we
hear of a chap who stepped into Mr.
Flint s and asked for a few pounds of
crackers. Having gotten these, he
called ft r some bacon, bat some how
was no where to be fonud when the
meat was ready for him. That fellow
must have been hungry.
Our greatest wonder is that no more
is taken. Borne of our m rchauts are
very careless, we think in leaving
their goods stnokel np in the center
of their store. Genuine rogues wont
no better cluince.
—Don’t forgot the entertainment
to-night (Wednesday) at the Metho
dist Parsonage by the Ladies’ kite
Society.
—The man that can put so many
oysters into a quart cup comes to the
front this week with his advertisement
os we predicted. He furnishes oys
ters at the usual price, 25 cts. per
quart and delivers them, but will give
five quarts to the dollar at his saloon
near M. & C. R. R. Depot. His oys
ters compare well with any we have
seen. He would > be pleased to fur.
nisli parties along the lines of the rail
roads. Give him a trial.
—We nr** pained t» cut ounce flic
de 'th of Mrs. and Mr. Joseph Doer-
flinger, Sr., of this city—the former
seventy-two and the latter seventy
years of age. They have lived hap
pily together for many, many years,
and now in ripe old age have “crossed
the river” in five days of each other.
Their separation was indeed short.
The stricken children and fnends have
oursymputhy.
—There is no doubt about it. Hollis,
