—“Competition is the life of trade,”
Northern cabbag es are down fto ten
cents apiece.
—Now is the time to crowd your
Calla lilies alitrd. Use boiling water.
Bank up the earth around the stem,
and pour the water a f( w inches from
the £plant. Nothing surpasses this
treatment for the lily.
—The city’s “Hotel” needs enlarg
ing. Seventeen mon, we learn, occu
pied one of its ie</ rooms last Satur
day night. A popular “Hotel” that,
such poor accommodations, and yet,
so well patronized! Guess meals are
chea .
—We have heard of “spelling bees,”
“shucking bees,”- and “quilting
bees,” but never before of a “setting
bee.” One of our truck gardeners
proto el having one last Saturday,
just after that fine shower, to get his
cabbages “set out.” The attendance
was slim
—A slight ultercation took place in
the neighborhood of Cook’s mill on
Saturday last between two white men.
No. 1 says No. 2 lias stolen his pistol
and No. 2 s: ys No. 1 lias stolen his
barrel of flour. Sequel—No. 1 flat
of his hack, heels upwards, and No. 2
walking off triumphantly.
— The Seaport Appeal is adver
tised for sale. We shall be sorry, to
char ge neighbors, for we might get
a less i on.enial spirit—one with less
consideration for the feelings of the
Adveiitisib household. If Brother
Smith really means to sell, we hope
he will 1 ave au eye to our comfort in
this matte .
—The McDuffie' Journn' comes to us
this week for the first. We welcome
jt on our *: change list. Thomson, Ga.,
its home, must he a thriving place,
indeed,.or ehe the editors of it are
possessed of great persuasive powers,
or both, for although a full sized pa
per, a large supplement is necessaiy
to ac 'ommodate the advertisements.
—The little girl who told her papa
that our little sheet (first issues) was
only big enough to “ write two letters
on” now thinks it will do for six or
seven. Thank you, little sis, for your
interest in our onterpi-ise. Be patient,
and the day may come when it will
be large enough for yon to write twice
six letters on. Remember, the Ad
vertiser must creep first, and then
walk—just as yon did. Some day it
may be able to run a strong race.
Take care, now, it don’t outgrow
you.
—Bay street was the seen?) of some
excitement Saturday evening. An
old “tar,” somewhat befuddled with
“benzine,” was disturbing the public
peace. Officer Bums tried to arrest
him, but he was rather too muscular.
A runner soon brought Marshal Falun
to tho spot, whose looks soon con
vinced the worthy son of the deep
that “discretion was the better part
of valor.” He slept that night on his
“little bed” in the city’s “Hotel,”
with sixteen sons of Ham as his bed
fellows.
—Have you registered? DoiTi. for
get it. The time is passing.
—Go to Leben’s and get some nice,
fresh Cocoanut Candy. It is good.
—Colds! Colus! Colds! Everybody
harking, and some of the old ladies,
returning to their yonthful sports, are
trying their throats at “croup. ”
—Be sure yon get the genuine arti
cle of “Alligator Stocking.” Those
that are colored with arsenic and oth
er poisonous drugs are said to “pois
on the foot.”
— Little John Riley, formerly of
this place, died on Doboy last Friday
of pneumonia, r.nd wns buried in this
city on Saturday, One jby one we
pass away.
—Rev. Abram Peek, colored, for
merly of this city, died in Brunswick
last week.—Darien Gazelle.
The Gazette is slightly ii: error in
name. Rev. Abram Burlce, colored,
died here recently from effects of an
injury received in being thrown from
a buggy.-
—“Talked to death” is to he the
verdict of the jury that a young man
thinks will soon sit on the body of a
gentleman of thirty-six summers,
whose lot it is to occupy a house with
three ladies. Look out for that young
gent, girls. You see what opinion he
has of the fair sex. He may tell you,
slioi tly after the “honeymoon” is over,
that pour tongue wags too much.
Onion Sets.—Now is the time to
plant them- L. B. Davis & Co. have
on hand a good supply at low figures.
Cull ; t once. ,
Signs —Mr. Tom O’onnov is now
prepared to paint signs, either plain
or ornamental. He can be found at
hD store on the Bay, where he will be
pleased to take your orders. Ho is a
worthy young man and merits the
good will of all. Give him your pat"
ronnge.
Sudden Death of Mrs. Love.—The
numerous friends of Mrs Hemy Love
will be pained to hear of her endden
death, which occurred at her home in
Bearson, Ga., B. & A. R. R., on last
Thursday night. She spent a few
days in our city last week, apparent
ly in excellent health, w-*s quite well
on Thursday last until bedtime, when
she complained of a slight headache
and c hilliness, and died in five hours.
Truly our hold on life is feeble and
uncertain. May Providence support
the stricken ones,
A Hard Case.—“Don’t say church
to me, I have paid my last dcllar in
that direction. Am not going to the
Presbyterian Church any more. I
shall attend the Episcopal now, and
continue to do so until iutjr begin to
call around to collect pew rent, then I
shall play quits aud put in for the
Methodist. But just ns soon as they
begin to talk the same foolishness,
why I’m ont and off to the Baptist I
shall go until they get after me, then
I shall quit all for good.
Look out for him, wardens, deaeoos
and stewards, and when he enters
have your chalk ready and mark him
