—A Chinaman, sailor, was knocked
down on the Bay last Saturday night
and robbed of $38. The robbers were
arrested.
—Qur Episcopal friends, having an
eye to comfort, are fitting up a heater
lo their ichurcb. Other churches in
town would be improved by such ar
ticles.
—Messrs. Woodward A Prince have
put up a two story front to their oys
ter establishment. The ory of “no
money” don’t seem to scare them.
Success to you, gentlemen.
—Why will some people send away
for grist and meal when they can get
a good article hen- at low figures?
Maybe, though, they don’t read the
papers, and “haint hearn” about the
new mill of Messrs. Hertel & Minor.
—Messrs. L. D. Hoyt & Co. are out
this week with a neat little ad. They
are offering bargains in lamps, lan
terns, etc. Their Oil was manufac
tured expressly for them, and is of u
very fine grade. Call around and ex
amine tl eir stock.
—Caj t. Dure, the news dealer, has
moved his “Depot” to his store on the
Bay, where he will be pleased to see
bis fri< nde. He is manifesting a pub
ic spirit worthy of imitation in shell
ing the street in the vicinity of his
sto c. “Go thou and do likewise.”
—George Ferrill accidentally shot a
colored girl on Bay Btreet last Friday
night. Says he “did not know the
pistol wi u d shoot.” What right ha<j
he to point and stop the pistol at her?
is the question the law should inves
tigate. Cait'lessne8S Bliould be pun

—Thieves are getting bold. One,
Jim Smith, attempted to enter the res
idence of Capt. Burke on last Sunday
night through his parlor window
about 10 o’clock. Capt. B., bearing
the noise at the window blind, pushed
it open, and leaping out, seized the
scamp and held him, meantime calling
for help, until Mr. John DuBignon
appeared on the scene. With a des
perate effort “Jeems” tore himself
loose and cleared the fence at abound,
a bullet from Mr. D.’s pistol entering,
the gate post just behind him. Fear
ing that the other four would be after
him with better effect, he surrendered
and was led away to the lock-up.
Signor Silvano.—This popular per
former, aided by Prof. Maurice and
the Royal Marrionetts, commences a
three night’s engagement at Fin*
ney’s Hall on Thursday of this {week.
In reference to the Entertainment we
clip the following front mi exchange:
Silvano’s scenery speaks a good
word in favor of a good show, before
the fan begins. It is costly and atF
tractive. * * * The feats of Leg
erdemain are new and good, certainly
better in every respect than those
which huve been worn threadbare by
the magicians of the day. The Royal
Marrionetts have to be seen to be ap
preciated.
Develop your Resource*.
In this day of general stagnation
and utter financial depression, one
cries one thing and another something
else, each in turn endeavoring to solve
the great problem “What’s tho mat
ter, money's so scarce?” Knowing
ones in the various circles of life pre
tend to see clearly into the matteri
and offer jrarious solntions, such as
“Inflation,” “Change of rulers,” “Re^
turn to gold basic,” etc. But, reader,
we fear that none of these things will
have the desired effect. The root of
the whole matter is deeper still. The
fault is at our own doors. Now v> e
have a solution, but one entirely dif"
fereni from these. The remedy is at
hand within our reach. It is in the
three words that head this article—
“Develop your resources.”
Go to work in good earnest to turn
muterial, now utterly useless, into
something that has a value, Do you
nsk wbut? We answer, anything—ev
erything, almost. In a recent article
in the Appeal you have clearly dem
onstrated what money is to be had from
the pin** trees that cover our forests*
A wide fieldjis here spread out before
you, and you are invited to enter and
occupy. We might call your atten
tion, too, to the culture of the bana
na, a delightful,fruit, and one.thatal
ways brings a good price. A bunob
of these, the product of a single plant,
will bring from 3 to $5 any time. One
hundred trees alone woqld support a
small family. ,- KiU >j(i .
Put ’tis not of these that we propose
to write in this article, blit of an enter
prise that will pay even, betteT. We
refer. to the culture (if we may so
speak) of the oyster. We learn from
those who know, that one hundred
bushels of “raccoon” or bunch oys
ters, broken apart and scattered in
proper places, will double themselves
in twelve months. Now let us figure
the cost and profit:
■ DR. _
To 100 bus. Raccoon Oysters. .$0.00
’’ two laborers, two days each,
$1.25@ per day.,.... v .5.00
’’use of boat....2.00
” cost of gathering same one
year hence. .7.00
* $14.00
; cr. .
By 200 biiR. (double) Single
Oysters, 30cts, @...... .$60.00
Profit...., .,..,...$36.00
Now if anyone can show better real
figures we would like to see them We
know of no field 1 that presents a finer
prospect. Oysters raised this way are*
much nicer, too, than the others, and
bring a higher price. We know of a
party near a sister city who gets 85cts.
tier qnart for his oysters (hiR own rain
ing) whilst others can only realize the j
usual price, 25ets. Now here is an!
opening, who will embark? Messrs. *
Woodwurd & Prince offer to buy next
season all the oysters that can be rais
ed, and from now until tlio last of Feb
ruary is the proper time to plant.
They are going to plant themselves,
and will take pleasure in giving any ,
information on the subject. I

the present arrangements “are abominable.'- If
those who do the business that supports the rosd
do not complain what have other |partfes to say

nation of the shipments, to and from Bninswlck in
this connection would throw some light upon the
matter, ao Car as the B. & A. B. B. is conoerned.
