[Communicated. ]
Snv., Nov. 11th, 1876.
Mr. Editor:
In your issue of yesterday you
advise your readers to cultivate the
raccoon oyster. I object to one item
in your advice, and that is ■where yon
advise to break the bunches. If the
scattering is done with unbroken
bunches the oysters will separate nat
urally and make single oyters, grow
ing finely. If the bunches are broken
many of the oysters will die.
* Your truly,
Oyster Loveii.
The above communication from a
gentlemauin Savannah we take pleas
ure in publishing, as it corrects an
error in last week’s issue. We depend
ed upon others for our information,
being ignorant of the subject our
selves, hence the mistake. Since re
ceiving the above we have had an in
terview with Mr. Burnes, an experi
enced oyster man in all its details, now
with Messrs. Woodwaad & Prince of
this city, who informs us that “Oys*
ter Lover” is very correct in the ubove
matter. He gives, too, some good
suggestions to those who think of evil'
tivating oysters this season. He says,
Get young thriving oysters, bunch
or otherwise, and place them where
they will always be under water, on
a firm clay or shelly bottom with a
thin coating of mud—not sufficient,
however, to allow the oyster to sink
deep enough to bury itself. Having
lain there one or two seasons, ns the
case may be, take them up, cull them
over, and replant the small ones else,
where placing an entire new plunting
on the bed formerly occupied by these.
We hope these suggestions will be en
tertained by our people, and that
every one, who can, will give the
matter a fair trial, end thus develop,
at least, one of our resonrees.
Ghost.—'Twos night—the time that
ghosts and hob-goblins are said to per
ambulate the earth. The pale moon
had just risen above the tree tops,
when a fignre, in the linbilin ents
of the grave, entered our office, and
in sad and plaintive notes asked to
have her demise printed. We stood
aghast—revolving mnny things in our
mind. Our “devil,” not at all daun
ted, brandished his roller high in air,
threatening to exterminate all before
him—when lo! he discovered about
the neck a neat little collar and pink
neck-tie, sweetly clasped by broach
with pendants dangling and underneath
the ghostly robes he saw protruding
the hem of a calico dress and a neat
little shoe. He lowered his weapon,
believing he had Been that broach and
tie before. 8he vanished. —
Borne mischievous party left the
following on our table during our ab
sence. As we know of no one in
this section who “fills the bill," we
conclude it is not personal, so "ive it
