“By AM Davenport—
Resolved, That the tract of land for
which Mr. M. H. Ward has made ap
plication to lease, be leased for the
term of fifteen years to the highest
and best bidder, on the customary
conditions, and the farther condition
that in the event the City makes com*
promise with its creditors by dispos
ing of the Commons, the said lease
sha)l expire at the date of compromise
unless the parties obtaining this land
under said compromise agree with the
lessee, and the committee on Town
Commons ere hereby authorized to
carry the above resolution into effect
and the Mayor and Clerk to execute
said lease.
Which was adopted.” t
We publish the above resolution
from the last issue of the Appeal, the
official organ of our city, in order to
place our City Fathers in a proper
light before the public.
Read all the Proceedings of Council
next time, Brother, before you shoot,
and thus save your powder.
We clip the following from on ex
change, and would urge every parent
to read it wiih care. We know of
nothing so well calculated to assist in
the education of u child as a good
newspaper, suited to its wants. Par
ents are too careless on this point.
They either furnish their children
with trash—-“dime novels,” etc., or
else with nothing at all, and then won
der why Johnnie don't love his books,
or Willie wont stay at home. The idea
is this: create in yonr children a de
sire for reading, by famishing them
with proper matter, and they soon ac
quire a habit of reading, that will do
as much for their mental training as
as anything else.
“Give Youb Child a Paper.—A
child beginning to read becomes de
lighted with a newspaper, because he
rends of names and things which are
familiar, and he will progress accord
ingly. A newspaper in one year is
worth a quarter’s schooling to any
child. Every father must consider
that information is connected with ad
vancement. The mother of a family,
being one of its heads, and having a
more immediate charge of the chil
dren, Bhonld herself be instructed. A
mind occupied becomes fortified
against the ills of life and is braced
by emergency. Children amused by
reading or study are of course more
considerate and easily governed. How
many thoughtless young men have
spent their earnings in a tavern or
grog shop, who ought to have been
reading. How many parents who have
not spent twenty dollors for books for
their families, would have given thou-
sands, to reclaim a bun or daughter,
who had ignorantly, thoughtlessly,
fallen into temptation.
Atlanta ia very much afflicted—only
nineteen names mentioned iu connec
tion with the Mayoralty. The per
quisites there must be better than with
us. 80 liar, we hear of no name defi
nitely.
The first newpaper in America was
printed in Boston, on the 25th of Sep
tember, 1690, just one hundred and
eighty-fire years ago.
