Bee Culture.
The Lob Angelos {Cal.} Heruld unya:
Bee cnitnre is spreading rapidly. At
tuo rate of iuCiOogo A ia uotiiu&tod tliat
there will be in four years oue million
■stands of bees in this and the two ad
joining counties which will produce
annually 100,000,000 pounds of honey,
worth $28,000,000, which is more than
the value of the sugar and molasses
crop of Louisiana, Texas, and Florida
combined.
We clip the above from an exchange,
and would ask our readers in the coun
try, as well as those on the outskirts
•of our city, whether the above culture
•could not be made a paying business
in this section, and thus be another
means to “develop our resource.” We
are not at all familiar with the nature
and habits of the honey bee, but feel
sure that time and stndy given to the
subject by those engaged in Agricul
tural and horticultural pursuits would
notbeinvain. With the present pat*
ents, in the shape of bee-hives, there
need be no danger from the great en
emy of the bee, the moth. Any agency
employed in developing ourresources,
other than manual labor, is, in our
judgement, clear gain, or, in other
words, the surest road to wealth is
through those channels that require
least labor, and will be ever on the in
crease, whether the owner be asleep or
awake, under this head we class the
products of the farm in all its various
phases. A communication, for publi
cation, from some person versed on
this point would be gladly received.
Who will furnish it?
We have been kindly furnished by
Mr. Wm. Gowan a copy of the Bruns
wick Advocate, dated August, 1837—
edited by J. W. Frost, and published
by Davis & Short. It has no “locals,’’
whatever, —mostly miscellaneous read
ing. A short article about the Sul-
phur Springs at Waynesville, and here
and there a stray advertisement, is all
we found pertaining to the place. It
is rather a curious specimen—some
what behind the Appeal in point of
style, and general made up.
HOT A popular writer, speaking of
the ocean teleghaph, wonders whether
the news transmitted through the salt
water will be fresh.
