“ETerrMan ha a his Price, and
can he Bought/’
Ho we beard a gentleman remark a
few days sinee. Some, he said, tor a
very little, and others for mnoh more.
Can this u£ tme? Is there, indeed, no
one whose estimate of himself'is above
price; yrbose principles cannot be
swerved to the right or to the left for
gain? Is it a fact that the human race,
although possessing powers far above
the animal kingdom, is so closely al
lied toil as to sacrifice honor, virtue,
truth, and justice—all for mere gain?
We cannot believe it. Our ideas of
true manhood are far above this.
Good and pure men have lived in all
ages, who, instead of sacrificing prin
ciple for gain, have done just the op.
posite, and sacrificed ali, even life it
self, for principle. We grant that these
cases are few—that of the multitude it
can be said, they have their price; of
fer it, and they ore yours. But not so
of alt, in our judgement. Else of what
avail the death of those who cheer
fully gave up their lives for country,
or perished “at the stake,” or “in the
flames?” Could they hove been
bought? We think not. Life is dearer
than money, and they forfeited that
for principle. Would money have bad
a richer charm? No, reider, men yet
live whose price cannot be named.

“As this will 1>e the last annual mes
sage which I will have the honor of
transmitting to Congress before my
successor is chosen, I will repeat or
recapitulate the questions which I
deem of vital importance, which may
be legislated upon and settled at this
session.
First, That the States shall be re
quired to afford the opportunity of a
good common school education for ev
ery child within their limits.
Second, No sectarian tenets shall
ever be taught in any school support
ed in whole or in part by the State or
National Government, or by the pro
ceeds of any tax levied on any com*
munity. Make education compulsory
os for us to deprive all persons who
cannot read and write from becoming
voters after the year 18'.)0. Disfran.
chising none, however, on the ground
of illiteracy, who may be voters at the
time this amendment takes offect.
Third, Declare Church and State
forever separate tnd distinct, but each
free, within their proper spheres, oud
nil church property shall bear its own
proportion of taxation. ,
Fourth, Drivo out licensed immor
ality, such as polygamy and the im
portation of women for illegitimate
purposes. To recur again to the Cen
tennial year, it would seem as thnngh
now, as we are about tc begin the sec.
end c-Titery of cur nuil.-mal
would be & must fitting time for these
reforms.
Fifth, Enact such laws as will insure
a speedy return to a sotted currency,
such as will command the respect of
the world. Believing that these views
will commend themselves to the great
majority of the United States, I sub
mit the rest to Congress.
