' "Timeharries on
With a resistless, unremitting stream,
Yet tread* lucre soft than e’er did midnight thief.
That slide* his band under the miser’s pillow,
And carrie* off his prize.” e
, > —Blair.
Time, indeed, humel on. Slowly,
bnt surely, its chariot wheels revolve,
bringing us ever nearer and yet nearer
the end—to many, the happy consum
mation of their plans; to others, the
blasted hopes of an entire life. We
know of no time move befitting than
the present—the closing days of ’75—
to pause and reflect, for a season, suf
ficiently long, at least, that We might
read over the pages of life’s history
for a twelve-month past, to see what
of good or evil its finished pages dis
close. Yes, reader, finished, for no
composition yet discovered can erase
the pencilings on the pages of Time’s
great day book. The record is indeli*
ble, for ’tis written by the finger of
Jehovah himself, and there must re
main until the fiat goes forth, "Time
was, time is, but time shall be no
more.”
The present fleeting hours of the
departing year, we say, is a proper
time to read over these written pages,
as far as memory will serve us, and
see how much of them we regret, and
would like to change if we could; how
many golden moments of misspent
time we can recall; how many hard
and withering speeches we may have
made; how many unkind words we
may have uttered; or worse still, how
many barbed arrows we may have
hurled indirectly into the quivering
flesh of some unfortunate victim; how
many impure thoughts have entered
our minds, or words escaped our lips,
fit for none, and excusable only in the
ignorant and debased; and above all,
to sum up the countless opportunities
for good that we have allowed tc pass
unimproved, thus increasing our guilt
by adding to deeds of commission
those, also, of omission.
May not these thoughts be of bene
fit to us just at this junoture when we
are about bidding adieu to the old year
and starting a new one? Could we not
form new resolves and aim for a high*
er standard, profiting by the past
year’s experience; and having these
shortcomings before us, so tack our
ship as to avoid the currents that car
ried us astray in the past?
Erring reader, would you avoid the
maelstrom ahead? Would you rid
yourself of the influences that are
dragging you thith^? Then resolve
now, whilst the pages of the great
book of 1876 are being entered up and
sealed, that your account in that of
1876 shall have more of good and les s
of eril Make your resolve and stick
to it, and be sure that you avoid most
faithfully all those scenes and oasocia.
