—The Public Schools of this city
will dose for the year to-morrow
(Thursday).
—Read notice of “city property for
8 a)e” in this issne. The 1 ovality is a
healthy one, and convenient to busi
ness. Call on Mr. Chas. Doerflingfer
on the Bay, for terms, eto.
—The new warehouse of Messrs.
Littlefield k Tison approaches com
pletion.
i Iso the “Machine Shop and Brass
Foundry" neurly ’opposite, on the
Bay.
—Col. Town's stAvemaohine will be
in operation by Friday next, we learn.
Phamix-like, he rises ont of the ashes.
—Two v team tugs now running, and
a third one contemplated. That savors
of business. Hurrah for the smartest
captain! *
—“Did you ever see (a) Bee catch a
ft h?” Ans. “Yes; you can witness
the si . ht, from Cook’s wharf, almost
auy fine day at low water."
—“Christmas comes but once a
yeur,” so don’t stint the little folks.
Get ready to fill their stockings brim
full next Friday night.
—The Key of the Guff (Fin.) reaches
ns, lately, only twice a month, but two
papers at a time. How is this, Brother
Crane? We would much prefer “bro
ken doses."
—Read President Grant’s recom
mendations to Congress on fourth
page. They have the ring of the true
metal, bnt will they be carried ont?
“Them’sthe questions.’’
—We ore requested to give notioe
that High Mass will be celebrated at
the Catholic Cbnroh of the city Christ
mas Eve, at night, at 12 o'clock M.
The public ore invited to attend.
—Butler’s Irland, near Darien, has
raised over 65,000 oranges this year.
Why can’t other islands in this sec.
tion be utilized in the same way?
Wakenp, people! wake up!
—She sent ns one—only think of it,
reader—just one big yam potato, and
politely hinted that we might put her
“name in the paper" for it Try it

—The work on the Dodge, Meigs k
Co.'s saw mill on St Simons Island
goes bravely on. A little colony will
soon be domiciliated there. Money is
indeed* powerful-agent—people dis
perse or gather at its bidding.
—The steamer Olyphant make* her
trip daily, bnt as yet i* not crowded
with passengers. The line don't seem
to be known abroad, hence tickets are
purchased by w*y of the other lines.
The return travel, however, will, no
doubt come by this route.
—We hear of a project on foot to
open up a daily mail line between this
city and Femandina. The steamer
Olyphant offism to carry the aame for
a nominal amount. Ibeeost there
fore, would be nothing, scarcely, and
the advantage great to many, espec
ially to the citizens of Femandina.

Cook is espec.cd to nil the pnlpit of
the Methodist Church of this city on
Sabbath next (26th inst)
Presbyterian Church.—A letter
from Rev. John Beveridge informs us
that he.will (D. V.) fill the pulpit ol
the Presbyterian Church of this city
on the 26th iust, also 1st Sabbath in
January, and regrets not being here
last Sabbath as per invitation. Rev.
N. Shortwell of the Synod of Tenn.,
has been invited to fill the pnlpit on
the 2nd and 3rd Sabbaths of January.
Bigger Still.—Two weeks ago we
gave Lt. Risley oredit for the largest
turnips of the season that we had seen
—one measuring 21J inches around.
Since then Mr. Israel Powell has sent
us a sample of flat turnip as large
around but containing less body. And
now onr worthy County Treasurer
Mr. John P. Lamb, steps to the front
and sends us three specimens of the
Ruta Baga turnip, measuring, respect
ively, 21 i, 22, and 23 inches round
and long in proportion—thus out
stripping both the other gentlemen.
Try it again, Lieut., may be your g

Chicken Farm. —We met in onr oity
last Saturday a Mr. Thomson from the
“Buck Eye” State, who 1b in search of
a suitable place for the establishment
of a chicken farm. He represents him
self a* thoroughly conversant with the
business, and offers to famish gratu
itously any information on the subject
desired. We have long thought that
this enterprise would be profitable in
this section, and wondered why some
energetio persons, near here, have not
given it a fair trial. Guess, though,
they think it beneath them, and only
fit work for children and old women.
A mistaken idea, we think. Tiaa
science, as well as many others, and
to succeed requires study and atten
tion. Who else will embark?
Spelling Bee.—The exercises of the
npper department of the public school
for whites were varied last Friday af.
teruoon by a spelling match. Misses
Maggie Moore and Mary Futch were
selected tyr the teachers to “pick sides"
from the entire school, male and fe
male. The true test of a good speller
being in the mastery of snob worJs a*
are used in ordinary conversation and
written communications, Holmes*
Fifth Reader was selected as a proper
book from which to select words for
the contestants. The entire school en
tered into the raoe with considerable
seat, each side determined to hold the ■
floor. For *n entire hour Sis two cap
tains sad their hosts waged the fight,
their tanks diminishing at every
round of words. Hue Louise Barku*
loo and Master Paul Williams on one
side, and Mimes Maggie Moore and
Mary Pettigrew on the other held the
floor longest. The first two, however,
yielded at last, and left the fl/fld to
Miss Maggie and Miss -Maiy. These
were then pitted against each other,
and spelled nntfl their teachers, fail

—A gentleman just from Albany,
Ga., reports money matters there as
awfully tight—decidedly worse, he
thinks, than here. We sympathize
deeply with thoee people.
