WEDNESDAY, Jan. S 1876.
Happy Hew, Year! :
The old year, with all its associa
tions, is now numbered with the
laing3 of the past, and its history—
written and unwritten—is nil that wfl
lied of it that is tangible. The New
Year has been ushered in upon us, and
we extend to all a “happy greeting,"
hoping that it may prove a happy one
to each reader of the Advertises.
May all the sweets of the old year,
with none of the bitter, be multiplied
to every one of you: may joy unal*
loyed be yours every day throughout
the year 1876, and at its close, find
each of you at peace within, and with
all around you. *
Now, in order to insure for yourself
these great blessings, we offer you the
following suggestions, clipped from an
t-xchange, which may be of service,
giving, as they do, the only true rule
for ‘'individual prosperity:”
A prosperous community is one
madd up of prosperous individuals.
The rule for individual prosperity may
be given in four words; ‘Live within
your income.’ To those who are dis
heartened at the past and oppressed
with gloomy forebodings, we would
say, Make’ a calculation of your prob
able income for the next year—allow
ing a broad margin for losses and mis
haps—and then determine that your
expenses shall not exceed it. Carry
out this determination, labor heartily
six days in the week, rest and worship
God on the seventh, liVe in love end
charity with your neighbors, trust in
a merciful, over-ruling Providence,
and you will never come to want.
Leap__Jear
“ ’Tis a long lane that never turns,"
is an old adage that seems applicable
to the present For three long years
•‘the boys” have had full control of all
the love-making. But. os this is Leap
Year, they mu-1 now stand one side,
and give the fair maidens and smiling
young widows a chance to Bhow what
they can do. Our word for it, boys,
you have made very slow progress.
We look for a livelier time, now that
the way is clear.
Old baohelors, yon who have seared
over your hearts as with an iron, ren
dering them, as you think, impervious
to all from without, beware lest Cu.
pid’s dart, guided by the skill of some
dashing maiden or winsome widow,
enters some vulnerable part of your
armor, and you be led away captive,
with the matrimonial noose around
your neck, and yon forced to be hap
py, although against your will. Be
ware, we say. or your single misery
will, this year, be exchanged for dou<
ble blessedness.
Clippings.
Consolation for old maids
fortunes never come singly.”
