Among Andersen's peculiarities was
u mortal fear of dog3. He once wrote
to an intimate friend residing in Geneva
that he meant to come to pay him a
visit, and would arrive on a certain
day. The family possessed a laree but
poetfs visit, was carefully
chained up. The day appointed for
his arrival came, but no Andersen
made his appearance. Days and weeks
succeeded, and still he did not come.
At last the family received a letter
from him post-marked Nice. “ Dear
friends," he wrote, “ I arrived at your
house on the day I stated, but when I
got to the gate I saw such a big dog in
the yard that I did not dare to go in,
and so I took the first train to Italy.’

That made by Caswell, Hazard & Co., New

ScHEycK’s PcLMOtnc Syrup, Sea Weed Tonic,

several maxims which have for many years ob

supposition that “ Consumption is Incurable ” de

for that disease, and patients afflicted with it recon

very great number of cases (some of them apparently
desperate ones) by Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrup alone;
and in other cases by the same medicine in connec
tion with Schenck’s Sea Weed Tonic and Mandrake
Pills, one or both, according to the requirements of
the case.
Dr. Schenck himself, who enjoyed uninterrupted
good health for more than forty years, was supposed,
at one time, to beat the very gate of death, his phy
sicians having pronounced hla case fiopeless, and
abandoned him to his fate. He was cured by the
aforesaid medicines, and, since his recovery, many
thousands similarly affected have used Dr. Schenck's
preparations with the same remarkable success.
Full directions accompany each, making It not
this purpose he is professionally at his principal
office, Corner Sixth and Arch Sts., Philadelphia,
every Monday, where all letters for advice must be
addressed. Schenck’s medicines are sold by all
druggists.

A Valuable Work.
Dr. R. V. Fierce, of Buffalo, distinguished
in surgery, and the general practice in the
profession he honors, has made a valuable
contribution to the medical literature of the
day, in a comprehensive work entitled “The
People's Common Sense Hedical Adviser.’’
While scientific throughout, it is singularly
free from technical and suited terms. It
comes right down to the common sense of
every-day life. Dr. Pierce is a noble speci
men of American manhood. He has sprang
from the people; and, with many sympathies
in common with the masses, has sought to
render them a substantial service in tins, the
great work of hir. life.
The judge or a court in Maine re
cently sentenced a culprit to twenty-
five years in the state prte&n. The fact
was communicated to the prisoner’s
mother, who was struck at the magni
tude of the sentence. “What did
they do that for?” she exclaimed.
“Twenty-five years! Why, he won’t
be contented there three weeks.”
