SSL-There will be no Advertiser
next week, as we propose to celebrate
THE GLORIOUS FOURTH!
—Naval stores and wool have rolled
in pretty lively for the past week.
—Rev. J. W. Simmons is off on a
short tour. Guess lie will give the
Centennial a call before he returns.
—Mrs. Mary DuBignon, wife of
Col. Du Bignon, died last week ut her
residence in the country.
—Why starve when you can get
roosting ears at a cent apiece, and
eggs at 18cts. per dozen?
—The distillery of Mr. Peuniman
opened in full blast yesterday. Wil'
make a shipment this week.
—The hands on Mr. James Cooper’s
plantation are the first in this section
to enjoy specie payment (silver). It
works like magic.
r^May her churn never lack cream
nor lier butter dish be empty. Bless
the dear ladies, we say, especially
those who know what '“medicine" we
need.
—Our townsman D. T. Dunn is back
again from a short trip North, where
he had been summoned by the illness
of his aged father. He represents him
as still feeble.
—The work on the St. Simons Light
House has been completed, and every
thing is now reported ns being in nice
order, and a credit to this part of Un
cle Sam’s plantation.
—See card of Mr. John Silvan in
this issue. We most earuestly bespeak
for him your patronage. He has been
blind for five years, and lias just been
burned out in Fernandina, but still
bouyant and hopeful, he is striving to
gain an honest living for his little fam
ily.

—We met in our office a few days
since, our young hotel friend Mao
Haywood. He informs us that he has
sold out his hotel interest in Jesnp,
and is seriously contemplating a move
to Cumberland Island, to engage in
farming, stock raising, etc. We wish
him success in his new enterprise.
Plant Potatoes.—A year ago we
published an article on the subject Of
-raising sweet potatoes, showing that
crop to be the most remunerative in
this immediate vicinity. The seasons
were very poor, however, and the crop
cut short. As the rain fall this season
seems to be all that can be wanted, we
again urge the same matter. No dan*
ger of raising too many! Should the
market be glutted, remember they are
an easy commodity to turn into ba
con. Then utilize every spare foot of
ground; plant every nook and comer
during the next three weekB.
A prosperous country is one that
raises a plenty to eat! This is trqe;
act upon it.
Strange Conduct.—The ‘•sperits,’'
or something else equally careless of
the opinions of mortals, one night last
week entered the residence of neigh
bor Gowan, in Dixville, (no one being
at home:) and “cut up jack” generally.
Chairs, tables, etc., wore piled up in
the middle of the parlor; bedstead and
bed pulled around iu the middle of the
room, haring apparently been occu.
pieu; window curtains all tied up in
knots; milk spilled on the floor, etc.
Strange to say, nothing whatever has
been missed from the house. The
family are quite at a loss to know how
to interpret this strange conduct.
Underbrush.—We learn that the
Board of Health have recommended
to the City Council the propriety of
cleaning out the underbrush east of
the M. & B. R. R., betwoen the depot
and the point opposite tho Forman
place — provided, however, that the
brush be burned as fast as cut
We know of nothing that would con
duce more to the comfort of our citi
zens in the central jiart of town. As
it now is, these people are cut off from
the delightful sea breezes that sweep
the eastern part of town. Their is no
comparison in the temperarure of Dix
ville and down towu iu the afternoon.
The marked difference has been the
subject of remark by many closo ob
servers.
Besides this, wo believe this meas
ure will odd greatly to the health of
that portion of our city, dissipating
any miasmatic influence that may ac
cumulate there either from pond or
hammock. We hope our City -Fathers
will act upon their recommendation.
Court House.
“Great minds run in the same chan
nel," is the rule, but how widely they
do differ sometimes! Since the little
notice given by us recently of the de
termination on the part of our Com’
missioners to erect a temporary Cour*
Room, by way of curtailing expenses,
many and sundry have been the ideas
advanced on the subject. One says>
“build it of brick,” another, “of
stone,” a third, “of plank,” a fourth,
“of building paper, and cover with
asbestos,” whilst a fifth, thinking he
has hit the nail plumb on the head.
Bays, “Buy the Smith and Dexter
building and you have got the very
thing you want.”
What becomes of the Scripture quo
tation “In the multitude of counselors
there is safety?” No, no, Messrs-
Commissioners, reject it all and take
our advice(?), build of granite,
Feeding Melons.
The following plan of feeding wa-
ttfcrtnelous has been furnished us by a
friend whd claims that this treatment,
jn a dry season especially, will cause
the fruit to grow almost double size.
We hope oiir numerous truck farmers
and gardeners will give it a trial this
season, and furnish us for pablic&tion
the benefit of their experience. Here
it is:
Sink a bottlo filled with a weak so
lution of water and guano or some
some other fertilizer into the ground
just underneath the stem of the mel
on; then, by means of a large needle,
pasffa double string through the stem,
allowing both ends of the string to
hang in the bottle. The moisture and
fertilizer will pass up by capillary at
traction direct into the melon, and
not be lost in tho various ramifications
of the vino.
Our Dufy.
We do not propose to mix in poll,
tics, but, having invited correspond
ence on subjects of a general charac
ter, we give place to the following as
such:
* Glynn county calls upon all her cit
izens to throw aside their old party
feelings and to stand up for “our al
tars and onr fires."
We haye need of all the talent and
energy we can send to represent us, us
well in the State Legislature ns in Con
gress.
Glynn comity must have a man who
can fight for her in the great battle in
which she is engaged, for Hie odds are
heavy against her.
Chatham county, alive to her own
interest, sends her best men to ropre.
sent her in the council of the State.
We, of Glynn, must meet this array,
and no one better than R. M. Tison
oan be selected for tho work. If ho
“stand among kings,” his voice will
be heard. Let a spirit of enthusiasm
be awakened in the heart of every man
in the county to do his whole duty for
this section of the State of Georgia:
now let nn contend for half the loaf os
our portion of bread, and not sit idly
down to “pick tho ernmbs” that full
rom onr neighbor’s table.
Will you sell your birthright? No)
Then rally under tho Tison flag for
the honor and welfare of
Old Glynn.”
