to press. Blow, propitious breezes,
and fill every sail bound hither.
—A 7 ft. 8 inch shark was caught
yesterday off Haywood’s wharf. Look
out, boys, when you go in bathing.
—A social entertainment will be giv

ning next, 13th inst., by the ladies of
the Methodist “Mite Society.” The
public are most cordially invited.

BLACK FISH can be had
any hour by calling at Herzog’ cor
ner on the Bay. Fresh lot just ar
rived.
—Times are hard, but some people
seem to move ahead, nevertheless. Of
the number we would mention Mr.
Glogauer. the grocer and fruit man.
His store has been increased to almost
double its original size.
—The.trees, underbrush, etc., a'ong
the M. & B. R. R. from the depot to
the tank have bet u cut down but not
burned. We hope the authorities will
see to it that this decaying vegetable
matter is not left there to breed sick
ness during the hot season.
—A letter from IJarien informs ns
that the good folks of that place and
vicinity will give an excursion to Bt.
Simons Mills to morrow (Thursday).
Would it not be a good idea for ou r
people to meet, them there and get
better acquainted? The day will sure
ly he one of pleasure* Who will move
first?
—It weighed 33 pounds, and this
was the Inscription thereon :
Mr T. G. STACY,
Advertiser Office,
From ) Brunswick, Ga.
Green Norwood, j
Watermelons are always appreciated
by us, especially so under circumstan
ces like the above.
—Just ask certain parties where
they would go just about now to find
the hottest place, and yon get the an
swer “Bailey’s mill on the Satilla.”
They claim that the Thermometer
stood nt 115 there InRt week in the
shade on board a vessel loading with
lumber, and that at no time during
the day was it. less than 106. Don’t
think we will move up there just yet
—96 about all we can stand.
Our neighbor of -the Darien Ga
zette pronounces our temporary sub*
pension of the Advertiser, last week,
for the purpose of giving vent to our
patriotism, “simply ridiculous.’’
Couldn’t he have found little milder
language to express himself? “Sim
ply ridiculous!” Well, we are sorry
to have pained him so, hut can’t help
it now; will promise, however, not to
do so next time. Do think editor and
devil might have one week to rest, at
least once in a hundred years.
Wanted. —Any person owning a
small place near this city, and on some
salt stream, might find a purchaser for
the same, if desired, by enquiring i.t
this office.
Personal. —The Savannah Neu-8
thus concludes a short article concern
ing our townsman Hon. John L. Har*
ris, Judge of the Brunswick circuit:
“Whenever His Honor has presided
at this court he has given universal
satisfaction to the bar by his ability
and great courtesy. He is one of the
many illustrations of the wisdom of
Gov. Smith in hi3 selection of the ju
diciary of the State.
Improvement.—Hurrah for our end
of town! We hope to hear in a few
days, just across the street in front of
the Post Office, that unmistakable
sign of progress, the sound of saw and
hammer. Our live baker and confec
tioner, Leben, we learn, is going to
consolidate his business at this point,
and to that end, is going to drive.hi*
pegs on New Castle street. Hurrah,
we say, for the m tu who can build,
such times as these. Wish we had a
hundred more such.
Strong Faith.—We have at last
found a man who actually has more
faith in the Advertiser than we. Our
faith we know to be strong, but his is
stronger. He aetua’ly paid us in cash
two year’s subscription, in advance—
and he lias no axe to tjrind either.
How different this from a certain few
who are almost two years behind
hand! It is said “it takes a heap o’
people to make a world,” and we be
gin to believe it. For our good, we
wish some of them resembled certain
others a little more. May be we’d get
in a few extra dollars long since due-
Take the hint, ye tardy ones.
Mexican Clover.—Whilst in Liber
ty county Inst week, we were shown a
specimen of the “Mexican clover,’’
said to be found in the U. S. in two
localities only—Alabama and Louisi
ana, besides a small quantity in Lib.
erty county It was never known in
Liberty untillfflince the war. How it
came there, none can say. Of the
value of this newly discovered (in this
locality) plant, many speak in high
terms.
It is relished by stock either in tho
green or dry state, and as a fertilizer
is superior. It line scarsely any root, |
and grows to be quite a vine. This
fact shows it to be an air plant, and*
as such, draining very little nourish’
nieut from the soil. A crop of this*
ploughed into the soil at the proper
seuson, would’“tell” upon the next
crop planted there.

that confidence we hope to see revived
when the present presidential election
is over.
If Tilden and Hendricks are elected,
we may hope confidently to see an
impetus given to everything, in short,
a rebound that will astonish the na
tives far and wide. Its influence will
be felt from hill top to hill top, and
from ocean to ocean. We say this be
cause they are for reform in its broad*
est sense, and, ns such, must inspire
confidence everywhere.
Of the election of Hays and Wheel
er we could not say ns much. Our
convictions are, however, that a great
change will take place, for their nomi*
nation over Blain and others, we con
strue to mean that the better class of
the Republican party demand a chango
for the better, feeling that the present
administration of tho Government at
their hands is a fraud and an imposi
tion. They, too. cry for reform, hence
the nomination. So, holding that
Hays and Wheeler is the choice of the
better class, and that, in the event of
their election, many changes will take,
place in Government officials, we trust
that better days may be in store for
our people. The rebound, however, in
in this latter case will not begin to
compare with that of the former. One
will be active, the other slugging
The latter, held back at every step,
whilst the former will be impetuous in
its strides. Let’s have the former, we
say.

vices to President Grant to fight the

Have we reached the bottom yet?
Some say Yes—claiming that there is
no possible chance to get any lower
on the financial ladder. With such,
we differ. Two.more rounds yet, ere
we hit solid earth, we believe, and
that through hog and quagmire—but
rest assured we will bounce when we
do hit. Confidence must be restored
throughout the length and breadth of
the land before we start upwards, am}
