WEDNESDAY, JULY 12,1874
Editorial Correspondence.
, Hinesville, Liberty Co., Ga.,
July 4th; 1876.
Bear Advertiser:
Well, here we are once more in deor
old Liberty, ail aglow with patriotic
fire within, celebrating the glorious
Fourth, and surrounded with a throng
such oh probably never assembled but
once before in this county, and then
under circumstances similar to the
present. At that time we celebrated
the centennial of the settlement of our
county; to-day we celebrate the cen
tennial of our Nation’s independence.
But how different the present from the
past! Then the people of this time-
bonored county were surronnded with
wealth and luxury, and their children
grew up in the classic halls of learn
ing, and in an atmosphere of morals
seldom enjoyed, but how is it to-day?
Alas, how changed! As we look
around and see the signs of desolation
everywhere plainly depicted, aud hear
the sad tale of want and poverty, our
poor heart bleeds for the friends of
our youth and the home of our birth.
Put despite all these reverses in for
tune and the changes naturally follow
ing, we are glad indeed to unite with
our worthy friend of the Hinesville
Qazette in proclaiming “There's life in
the old land yet.” We see evidences
of that life in the vast assemblage here
met together this day to celebrate, as
one man, the centennial of our Na
tion’s freedom from the yoke of op
pression; in the signs of improvement
plainly visible to the occasional obser
ver, and in the sumptuous repast here
spread out to-day. In these eviden-
0 es and a few others, which we need
not mention, we read a history in the
near future for this the place of our
birth and home of our childhood, as
glorious os in days of yore. This
may seem idle talk to those with whom
we mingle to-day, but it is our honest
conviction.
In pursuance to published notice,
the Chatham Artillery, with four brass
pieces, two of which were presented
to the company by Glen. 'Washington,
arrived by special train this morning
from Savannah, and by ten a. m. were
safely parked nnderneath the shade of
a grove close by, ready for the work
of the day. At 11:30 they “moved
out, and were duly received by a vast
assembly (about 1000), composed of
citizens and soldiery.
As soon as they hod passed in re
view, they took up their position in
40ntre of line and were duly welcomed
by Mr. Theo. N. Winn in a short, im-'
pressive speech, which was responded
to in happy style by private Walter
G. Charlton of the Artillery. Tlii 8
over, the Artillery retired to the out.
skirts of the crowd and fired the Cen
tennial salute of a hundred guns. For
a time we almost forgot ourselves, and
imagined we were hack in Virginia
•‘a-ahooting Yankees,” but one glance
at the tables, growning underneath
their burden of good things, Boon con
vinced us that ’twaa all “for fun” and
nobody was being hurt
Immediately after-the salute, the
orowd assembled in the Court House
and heard the “Declaration”’read by
Judge John Harden, after which they
were entertained by a double oration
from Messes. John. B. Mallard and A-
M. Mclver, giving a history of Liher-
ty county from its earliest settlement
Dinner was arnonnced at 8:80 P. it*
and, as is usual on such occasions)
very little dram beating was necessary
to marshal the forces for the grand
charge.
The afternoon was spent in witness
ing a tournament by the Liberty
Troop. 1st prize—handsome cake—
was taken by private J. B. Martin*
around whose neck we noticed suspen
ded the usnal medallion worn by the
successful trooper of the 22d of Febru
ary. The second prize, another cake,
was taken by private Thomas Hughes.
The first prize was presented to pri
vate Martin by j rivute Charlton of the
Artillery, and the second to private
Hughes by private Cyrus W. Mallard
of the L. L T., after which the assem
blage was entertained in happiest
style by speeches from Sausy of the
Artillery and Adjutant Meldrim
Judging from appearances, we
should say that all present enjoyed
themselves hugely—the day, to the
Artillery, being oue of recreation and
pleasure. They are indeed a fine com
pany, and one of which Capt. Wheat
on should well be proud. We noticed
npon their caps, and also upon the
flag of the Liberty Troop, the figures
1786, showing the organization of both
companies the same year.
To the friends who contributed to
our happiness for to-day, and to the
military who have given us this op
portunity to show forth our patriot
ism, we place ourselves under lasting
obligations and trust to witness many
returns of this happy re-union.
