BRUNSWICK ADVERTISER,
T. G. STACY, Editor and Prop’r.
TDUR8DAY, MAY 12, 1880
YESTERDAYS DOINGS.
MORNING.
Yesterday opened dark and ug
ly, despite our predictions of fine
weather With hearts buoyant,
however, the different Fair Com
mittees went to work to arrange
and set in order their various de
partments. The visitors, however,
were not numerous, being mostly
strangers, our own people thinking
to-day or to-morrow would suit
them as well. Secretary J. M. Dex
ter, presided in the big tent, enter
ing exhibits and receiving stran
gers with all the suavUer in modo of
a Chesterfield, whilst President
Habersham was ubiquitous, giving
general directions, as necessity re
quired. Meanwhile, Mr. Lamb
was looking after the prancing
quadrupeds, now eager for the ra
ces, and Mich Tison drilling his
bold Sir Knights for the coming
tilt. All in all, the Fair opened up
as well as could have been expect
ed, with an unpropitious sky low
ering overhead.
AFTERNOON.
The afternoon proving more pro
pitious, our own people put in their
appearance and by three o’clock
quite a crowd had assembled to
witness the pony races.
The following horses were en
tered and run in pairs and time of
each taken. The three making the
round in shortest time were de
clared winners, and will be put on
the track again on Friday and priz
es awarded according to time then
made.

NIGHT.
We go to press too early to give
full account of the entertainment
at D ; !!on’s Ha". Suffice it to say
that every reserved seat was taken
long before the houra.vived, and as
we put in this our last local dot,
“Pillicoddy” and “Sarah” are
convulsing the assembled multi
tude.
The Cubans have again struck
for independence. It is the old
trouble of Cubans aga'nst Span
iards, of native citizens aga'nst the
foreign born, for the possession of
the fruitful, but no longer ever
faithful isle. The rising includes
all the old patriot leaders, bidding
fa ; r to assume largo proportions.—
The quarrel is assuredly one that
must sooner or later result in inde
pendence.
As the campaign opens up, the
old tale of Southern barbarity to
the negro is finding its way into
print. Talmage's recent sermon on
his Southern tour will do much to
give the lie to such stuff.
Central Railroad stock is down to
87—89. What has become of all
the big combinations? We fear
the people have been sold out
again.
