Those Were Hot Days.
We mean from Hnn day last to Wei-
nesduy evening. It was simply fear
ful, as will lie sotu by the following
dialogue between three housekeepers:
Mrs. A—'‘Did you ever see such
wcuther ? Why, the suu is hot cuotigh

Mrs. B—“Actually, at noon, the

Diogenes w ith his lantern should
search the town all day? I doubt
it, since Pinafore last evening com
pleted the demonstration of a plob-
lem—a fact—that lias been under
going solution since the lieginning
of 1880.
People had been so long used to
saying “Oh, we cannot do this and
we cannot do that," that it had
very nearly become a popular
chronic disorder, when we com
menced the new and brighter year.
Just listen a moment to the old
song, *• Oh, we cannot have a Fair
this spring—there are no vegeta
bles, no flowers, no nothing.” Be
hold 1 we had a Fair—a gowl one
—a show to be proud of, and we
are all proud of it. “ There is no
use starting a Lidrary Association,
it wtll die out after a few week's
existence”—and lo I it has lived
for months, and bids fair to go on
to old age. “ What is the use of
having a Park Association—enough
money cannot be raised, and the
hogs never will be shut up.” What
do we see? A flourishing society
—popular, too—and with a good
healthy bank account. A great
many wise beads were shaken and
long faces pulled over the probable
fate of Pinafore, and lo! Pinafore
marched on deck last night in fine
array and knocked down the last
|K*g to which the doubters clung.
Do you not think, Mr. Editor, that
it is a good time to put a new mot
to at the head of your paper—this
one, in capitals: “ Where there’s a
will, there’s a way ?” And if the
people will adopt it, the results at
the end of the year will establish
rnoio than one fact, and surprise
the most sanguine.
But I took up my pen to tell all
those who do not know it that Pin
afore is a magnificent success and
fills the bill. The stage apjioint-
ments are perfect, and the play,
from beginning to ending, flowed
along in rhythmical measure as
smoothly and melodiously as the
waters beneath Her Majesty’s gal
lant ship.
It would be impossible to men
tion everything really worthy of
mention, or to particularizo each
character, and l will simply say—
h acted well the parts assigned
them. The soul aud nerve and

resulting in the victory of the An

the Annie’s winning time four

amounts changed hands, as usual.
There is some talk of another race,
but at this writing we can give
nothing definite. Mr. Dart, evi

defeat.
