Miss Mnry Flynn was studying
medicine anti being courted at the
same time. Mr. William Budd was
attending to the latter part of the
business. One evening while they
were sitting together in the front
parlor, Mr. Budd was thinking how
he should manage to propose. Miss
Flynn was explaining certain phys
iological facts to him.
“ Do you know,” she said, “that
thousands of persons are actually
ignorant that they smell with their

“Millions of’em,” replied Mr.
Budd.
“And Aunt Mary wouldn’t be
lieve me when I told her she could

“ How unreasonable!”
“ Why a person cannot kiss with
out n sphincter.”
“ Indeed 1”
“ I know it is so.”
“ May I try if I can?”
“ Oh, Mr. Build, it is too bad for
you to make light of such a sub

Mr. Budd seized her band and
kissed it. She permitted it to re
main in bis grasp.

sphincter helped me then or not.
Let me try again.”
Then he tried again, and while he
held her hand, she explained to
him about the muscles of that por
tion of the human body.
It is remarkable how much you
know about such things,” said Mr.
Budd—“really wonderful. Now,
for example, wlint is the bone at
the buck of the head called?”
“ Why, the occipital bone, of
course.”
“ And what are the names of the
muscles of the arm?”
The spiralis and the iufra-spi-
ralis, among others.”
“ Well, now let me show you
what 1 mean. When I put my in-
lra-s pi mbs around your waist so, is
it your occipital bone that rests up
on my shoulder-blade, in this way?”

Mr. Rudd, how can you?” said
Miss Flynn, after he had performed
the feat.
“Don’tcall me Mr. Budd, call
mo Willie,” he said, drawing her
closer. “ You accept me, don’t
I you? I know you do, darling.”
“ Willie,” whispered Miss Flynn,
faintly.
“What darling”
“ I can hear your heart beat.”

in the shape of a judiciary syataaa
established in thil county. Th*
convicts under charge of Judge V.
H. McWhorter, have enacted penal
laws and organized penal courta of
their own. They have among them
what is called a County Court,
whose jurisdiction extends from
ten to one hundred lashes; and a
Superior Court with a jurisdiction
from ten to one hundred and fifty

Julges of these courts, a Sheriff
and a prosecuting officer. They
have enacted laws punishing men
for improper con iuct in the stock
ade. for stealing, or for doing any
thing whatever against the order*
of the “boss.” If one is charged
with any offense, he is allowed a
fair trial before the court; and if ht
is convicted the Sheriff proceeds to
execute the sentence with great
vigor and relish. They punish for
all offenses—even for a failure to
work properly and fnitnfully. To
such perfection has the system
been carried, that Judge McWhor
