Long era tbit, no donbt, every realt or of this sheet has learned that one Soileau, a disappointed office-seeker, a “stalwart of the stalwarts,” w ith “no murder in his heart," and only “for the good of the party," and Unit, too, by “inspiration of Sod,” shot, on the 2d iust., President Garfield, in tho passenger depot of the Baltimore & Potomac Itailroad, at Washington.— Wo do not, therefore, refer to this now as a matter of news -for it is no news, tho horrible tidings having been Hashed days ago to the remotest cor- nor of Christendom—but by way of copy of tho first issue It is letter Gnitenn, iu his letters to Sherman j not be considered tho friends, but tho enemies of temperauce. A lively dis cussion followed the adoption of sneb strong language, and the last clanse ms finally withdrawn and tho first clause unanimously inferred to tho committee. He is a “stal wart of the stalwarts,” and os such al lowed his passions to run away with him, and in a fit of frenzy, struck down' one whom ho considered os standing in the way of tho stalwarts— a man of his own party, but one who had more soul than he, and who sought to check as it were, that very spirit that now wrangles the Repub- lican party, and which will, sooner or later, tear it to pieces. Insanity may be a good plea nndcr ordinary circumstances for such deeds oh recorded aboto—it may be an ox- cuho in ordinary cases, but not in this. The whole planning of the af fair shows Gnitoau to be no fool but quite the reverse, the only thing that looks like insanity being the desire to commit tho deed. All else marks him os a man thoroughly himself.— His insanity, therefore, is on one sub ject alone—stalwartism—and ho is re sponsible for that, having given loose reins to his passion, until, he became a fit subject to commit any deed con ceivable in the crime-stcc|>cd mind of tho doaperado, so long ns it carried out his cherished idea and thwarted tho wishes of those opposod to him.— There is ontiroly too much “method 1 in this fellow's tuaducss, and a little hemp-stretching wonld bo good for him and his kind. We admire firm ness in tho carrying out of one’s hon est convictions, but blind fanaticism we condemn in Democrat and Repub lican alike, for it is tho same con- tcinptihlo spirit that brought on our fratricidal war and deluged the land in blood. The move ment, however, must Im» kept entirely free from |>o!iticid complications. W. G. Whidby was made |x*rma- uent Secretary. A resolution of sympathy for Presi dent Garfield in his suffering, repro bation for his assassination, end pray ers for his s|K»edy recovery were passed. A collection was taken up, aiul tho purposes, and providing that distil lories, if desired, may be established by the vote of the communities in which they may seek to lie located and in which liquor is to be sold. This plan compels the enemies of temper ance to become the aggressive parties. Rev. G. A. Said saloons to^oll only from sunrise to sunset. Rev. Dr. S. W. Warren, of Macon, made an elaborate spooch for harmo ny, good senso and practical action.— Ho favored Captain Milledgu's substi tute, because ho feared Rev. Mr. Cot ter's amendment might fail iu its ap plication, and thon the cause would meot a disastrous backset.
