There nro three strange coinciden

people to find oat where it was, and
third—tho fact that lanterns wore

Great calamities are often prevented
by prompt action. Sucb was the ease
last Wednesday night, when tbo
alarm of fire was sounded nt Cook
Bros.' store. A possor-by observed
flames in tho wnrehouso adjoining tho
store, and stored with liny. Tlio
alarm was givon, aud parties near by
rushed to tho spot, carrying buckets
and tubs ot water, and breaking open
the door, extinguished the. flames
before they gained much beadwny,
the bales being too couipnct to burn
readily.
Au investigation showed tliut Die
lire was communicated to tbo liny
through a crack in tbo rear of tbo
building, and had it boon attempted
later in tbe night wonld have resulted
iu the destruction ot an immense
amount of property, for it would have
been next to impoasiblo to have put
out tbo lira after it bad gotten head
way, as it wonld havo boon difficult to
linve gotten tho engines to the water,
on acconnt of the lumber piles.
This is tbo second attempt within
tbe last month to burn out this firm,
for only a short tirno since fire was
discovered in the guano warehouse
of Mcsars. Littlefield A Tiaon, ou
tbo lot adjuining. Mr. Cook- has of
fered $1U0 reward for tho party or

is thought, would be beneficial.
