Yon said to me, Mr. Dnnn, Hint I hod notified the postmasters all along the lino of road of the existence of small pox, and asked them to tell the |>eo- pie to keep away from the Fair, os there was danger, ami yon knew the very day it was dono. I asked yon to go with me to the post office and look at the register and see who went out that day—yon refused to go. You said, at the same time, that the re- port* I had put out had injured lirnnswick to such an extent that site could uoi gui over it in twcuiy-nvu uiucu legislation, gentiomon—entirely too much. When Mr. Dunn called hiscouiuiit- tco together ho made a plain state ment to them, so he told mo himself, that I bod made those reports np the road. Marou Tiliyrapb. We were shown on yesterday sketch of tho route of the new Florida railroad. It is to be built by tho H 15. IMant syndicate, nnd will be run from Live Oak, Florida, southward to Bronson, Tampa, and tud at Char lotte Harbor—the finest harbor in the South. Tho road will be two hun dred and sixty miles long, aud will run through the best orange and fruit country in the world. It w ill serve a« an extension to the Florida tuiu Wcoieru road, ami wiii make un: Dunn imagine that ho was meant and enure that letter (Mr. Lang's letter) to be written? There Mr. Dunn is very plain again—bow does he know that I caused that letter to be written ? I never caused tho lotter to bo written. Mr. Laug wrote it without ray knowl edge, bnt when he bod written it be brought it to my car to mail it, nnd said, "Tborc is a lotter I linvo written to Mr. Dunn, in answer to tlie charges ho has made against aomo mail agent. I know yon mado uo such report to me, and I have told Mr. Dunn so in the letter. It is not aenled—take it out and read it,* nnd then seal it up aud mail it," which I did in his pres ence. This wns tho first I knew of tho letter. Bnt why I should imagine I was meant is not exactly plain to Mr. Dunn—I will endeavor to make it sufficiently plain for other people to see, even if Mr. Dunn cannot.— Tbcro wore but two mail agents on the road. Mr. Dnnn snid iu bis letter that a certain mail agent had put these reports in circulation, and as I knew that I had not, I did not wish anyono to think that I had, so I called on Mr. Dunn and asked him who he did mean, ami lie told ino plainly who ho raoaut. Now if Mr. Dunn had been as plain in his letter to Mr. Sweat ns ho was in his answer to tnr, I would linvo hod no need to have asked him, bnt in his letter it wns not good policy to be plnin. When ho told me ho meant tuo I knew he did uot moan Mr. Ross—bcforol wns at n loss, as cvcryono else know whom ho did menu. Neither I nor Mr. Ross could mako answer to his charges until we know who ho chnrgod. Is that plain, Mr. Dtinu? Yon state iu your letter Ihntonoof us did it—bow could I tell which one yon meant wbon yon gave no names ? Always bo plain, Mr. Dunn, always l>o plain. Mr. Duun says, “I uover saw Mur phy until- after tho Fair." The only reason for that was that I could not find Mr. Dunn. Everyone knows that I havo to run every day. I leavo my house at six o’clock in the morning, nud am then on duty, nud have uo tirno to spend with anyone. I don’t got back to Bruuswick until eight o’clock in tho oveningof tho next day, so you see I have hut littlo time to hnut anyone up. It I could have* found him he would linvo seen me sooner. But, when I did find him, he says I demanded in a very exeited manner wbo ho menut. I asked him in a very gentlemanly manner who ho meant, bnt when he told me I dill get somewhat excited, amt I said some pluiu things to Mr. Duun. He says he gave me his infortunut, and a rule among gontleiuen is that iu such cases the first party is relie veil. That in true, an a general thing. If M Dnnn had said, “Now, there is my authority; I know nothing niton! it, except what I linvc boon told," that would have relieved him; lap Mr Dnnn did not do that—lie said “There is my authority, and it is G—d d—d good authority—good enough for inv —and you can pitch into mo as noon an yon please.” I told him that I would pitch into him, nud I would prove tho whole thing to be a lie. He told ino to “pitch in and bo d—d.” I said, “I will, Mr. Dunn, nnd when I do I will make it hurt." He should ered the whole thing hiuisclf, and re lieved his informant, if be over had Mr. Dunn nays, “My letter (the let ter written to Mr. Sweat) contained neither the first nor second cbnrgoi *» -Mel in hit* defense.” Now, Mr <m aro not talking plain, ns l yon would m tho Vui the hands vf this syndicate. .V ucw ami dangerous counterfeit silver*dollar is now in circulation.— The imitation is in til respects perfect showing that tho machine used is of a high order. The metul is the only mark by which the spurious cburoc- tci can be told, it being of a white tinge, in no way resembling the silver used in tho genuine. What this com position consists of has not been de cided upon by experts, bnt it does not nxjairc an expert to detect tbo metal- ' {purity of the Spurious dollar. charged ;ii your that a cvrlnin instil agent was circulating a repoi t that “smallpox wns raging iu Bruns wick. which wns an infamous fie.” I asked ;,**•» who yon meant in that lot ter, ami you told me yon meant me. I told you then that I had put out no such reports, nnd that 1 would prove that the charges made by you were lies, sml I believe I have done it, and made it so plain that all the people can see it. I will leave it for them to decide. This is the first charge. Now, Mr. editor, Mr. Dunn tries to ’ vinccd. be witty os well os plain. He can t All of this yon said in tlie presence of several parties wbo were on the side walk at tho time—I do not know who they wero. I told you then and there that I would prove tho whole of that to be a fie. I liuve done it, tbnt is plain to every one else. I ho|ie Mr. Dunn can sco through it. Mr. Dnnn says he met me a few days ago and I showed him the article you published, and that I asked him if he thought yon would publish it — I asked him no such question. I showed him some of the ps|>erH and snid: “Now, Duun, I am going to publish this so ns to show to the pub lic that I am clear of the charges you have made against me. I will imv it publishod in the Brunswick paper if I can, and if I can’t, will have it< published somewhere else. I will not lay nnder snch charges and keep still?” He then snid bo had been told tlmt I bad notified the postmasters. At first, as I boforo mentioned, lie stated it as a fact of bis own certain knowledge, and said ho knew the very day it was done, bat when he found bo wns cor nered, ho tried to wriggle out by say- tbat ho wns told. This js tho second charge. Mr. Duun snyB he is glad that I did uot circulate tho lio among tho |>ost- raastors tbnt certainly wns out con cerning smallpox being in our city about Fair time. I mu sorry tlmt Mr. Dnnn made the chnrgcs when he knew there was no foundation for thorn Now, Mr. Editor, ouo tuoro word aud I am dono. Mr. Duun is an am bitious man, bo wants to bo ou top nnd in tho lead all the time— there is nothing wrong in that. Mr. Dunn is President of tho Agricultural Society, ho wants to build it np—tlmt is right, Ho wants every Fair held in Bruus wick to bo a success—tbnt is right, too; I admiro such n spirit in any man ns long as lie deals fair with nil mon, but Mr. Dunn only deals fair when it suits him; bo don’t care who sinks so he swims and ho will sink any man who comes in his wny, if bo can, nnd don't bcliovo he enros wbat moans lie adopts to do it, if it only helps to build up Dnuu. Ho tuny play tlmt game on some men, but I don't pro pose to be torn down to build up such men ns ho is. I understand that the Fair, finuii cinlly, was a failure, for which, us an individual, I am very sorry. I al ways want such enterprises to suc ceed, because they help to build up n country. Mr. Dnnn saw tlmt the Fair was to bo a failure and thought he would bo blamed for it, he lieiug at tho head of tho concern, so he began to look around to sco if ho could not lay tho blame on some one else in ad vance of any charges that might In* made against himself. So you sec the charges made against mo as well as others. If Mr. Duuu’s charges against others are as groundless as those against me, ns the proof shows, ho would have fared 1 Hitter to have ta ken all the blumo himself. But I will only speak for myself. I never med dle with any one’s business but my own. I have uo difficulty with any one os long ns I uni let alone, but when I am attacked I will defend my self ns well as I can. When I niii falsely charged with injuring a whole community, I will try nnd prove to tlmt community my innocence, which in this case, I believe I have done. Mr. Dnnu is a wriggler, hut lie bus got his foot into it this time. I in tend that he shall face the tnnsic him self; he shan’t wriggle out so easy as he nt first thought be would. Hut 1 havo said enough; my nrti cie »« longer than I intended, out sznlA say no Jess. Wbat I have writ ten is for the public to show them how groundless nil the charges were. I havo not been trying to con.iuce Mr. Dunn at all, ho knew how false they w«ro in the start, hut ho thought they never would be auswcied.
