' Gou. Bara aide died this week at bis
borne in Bristol, R. I.
Captain George Anderson, of Lau
rens county, S. C., wbo died recently,
bad eleven sons in tbo Confederate
army.
Lynching is getting popular now-a-
days. Two murderers wcro treated
to hemp this week, at Little Itock,
Arkansas.
Frank Hudson, colored, tbo mur
derer of tbo Leo family, iu Terrell
county, bas boon found guilty, no
will stretch homp.
Applications continue to corno in
from all over tbo country for space in
tbo Cotton Exposition. Three moro
additions arc being put on.
Massachusetts has refused Miss
Leila J. Itobinson privilege of prac
ticing law in her conrts. Served hor
right. Woman’s place is at home,
gracing tbo family circlo and not
wrangling in tho court house.
Owing to tho extremo drought, Dis
mal Swamp, on tbo lino of North Car
olina and Virginia bos been on fire
for several days. Tho corn crop of
North Carolina iB torribly short and
tho rice crop a total failure.
Eighty-six members absent from
tho House of Representatives at a re
cent roll call—only eighty-oight wore
prosont Sorno woro absent on loavo,
and others were not. Wo aro of the
opinion that that body bad better ad
journ and come homo.
Chrvnide and Conslilidiunalul: It is
rumorod that Jay Gould and C. F.
Huntington, of tho Kentucky Central
(who recently signod a contract with
Ool. Colo, by which tho Colo Syndi
cate secures a routo to Cincinnati),
havo secured control of tho Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad. No details arc
given.
Tho Jacksonville Union has given
the boy to tho long session of the
Georgia Legislature. It says that
honorablo body is simply waiting for
tho oponing of the Cotton Exposition.
It will bo ebeapor it thinks to remain
over at lour dollars per day and go in
on a free ticket, than to go homo and
bavo to corao back ns individuals.
Dick Jefferies, of Atlanta, commit
ted suicido a low days since by cut
ting his throat with a razor. Ho had
sufforod terribly of Into with nervous
dyspepsia, which had effected his
mind, hence the rash deed. A large
concourse of pcoplo attended his fu-
noral, for though a suicide, they had
overlooked that fact entirely, remem
boring him only ns what he hud been
—a friend to the poor and helpless.
Judge George Hillycr bos just com
pleted an extensive tour through tho
West and Northwest, and seeing tho
great dnmngo done to the growing
crops by the drought, advisos, through
tho Uunsldaliun, that our Georgia
farmers husband their resources, and
snvo every blade of grass they can
Senator Brown recommended the
same thing, recently, after an extend
ed tour westward.
THE REAHON WHY.
If you would know tho reason why
so many criminals now-a-days are
troatod by Judge Lynch, just read
the story of the trial of John Wil
liams, accomplice in tho murder of
Mrs. Brockett, of Decatur county.—
Tbo jury roturned a verdict of mur
der in tho first degree, but recommend
ed to tho mercy of tbo court, thus sav
ing tbo fellow’s neck. The Judgo In
formed thorn that if guilty in tbo first
degree thcro could bo no recommon-
datiou of mercy. What did that jnry
do ? Why they quiotly went back
and scratched out tho "first degreo'
part of the vordict, and John Williams
has boon sent to tlio penitentiary for
life. So long as such things go on
and tho gallons is cheated of its law
ful proy, jnst so long will Judge
Lynch sit enthroned. 0 lemjiora ! O

WHIPPED TO DEATH.
John Mathis, of Hall county,
whito boy oiglitcon years old, was
whipped to death at tho convict camp
on tbo Marietta and North Georgia
Railroad. Tho caso is considered a
flagrant abuse of tbo law and the cir
cumstances aro said to bo revolting.
Govornor Colquitt has had tho caso
thoroughly investigated and will pros
ecute tho pnrtics to the full extent of
tho law. This camp is not under tho
lossocs but the convicts aro furnished
directly by tho Stato to tbo railroad.
Later.—Tbo convict Mathis who
diod roccntly from an over doso, is
eliciting somo comment from the
press. It sooms ho was strapped over
a barrel and then turnod over to tho
whipping boBs, a big, burly negro,
who did his part well, no doubt. Af
terwards it is said tho prisoner ntc n
hoarty dinner, and very soon after
died. Now tbo problom to bo solved
is, did bo dio of ovor doso of lash or
of dinner ?
THE QUESTION 11EINO SOLVED.
Atlanta has boon somowhnt troublod
to know what to do with all tho pco-
pie who wcro coming to her Expose
tion, but sho bos about solved tho
quostiou. Besides her regular hotels
and boarding houses, a big hotel has
boon put in the grounds, and now
oomos tho nows that tho-largest tont
hotel iu the United States, which was
located for the summer at Orango
Lako, Now Jorsoy, will bo established
at tho Exposition. It covors twolvo
acres of ground, and will furnish ac
commodations for sovoral thousnud
pcoplo daily. Tho lodging tontB aro
all floorod, providod with water, good
bods, aro rain proof and make com
fortable rooms. Tho whole enchant
ment is lit with electric light, uud will
bo providod with tho best of music
aud with spociul police.
THE OIIEAT MICHIGAN KIBE.
Death and Destruction in Itul’Mh.
Oar exchanges bring as heart-rend
ing news of tbo terrible Michigan fire.
Not only tbo forests bare been de
stroyed, but tbe very gronnd itself or
rather its ernst bas been consumed by
tbo fire. It seems thcro is in that
country a mould or deposit sever
al inches deep, of vegetable matter
on tho surface of tbe ground something
like that found in certain localities in
Georgia. In a very dry season like
tbo past this ernst become* combus
tible, and once on firo nothing short
of a heavy rain can extiognisb it Be
low will be found a statement from
tbo committeo of relief. It is heart
rending in tbo extreme:
Port Huron, Mich., Sept. 11.-- To
the American People: We bavo to-night
returned from tbo burnt district of
Huron and Sanilac counties. We
have scon tbo burnt, disfigured and
writhing bodies of men, women and
children. Rough-board coffins con
tained tbe dead, followed to tbe grave
by a few blinded, despairing relatives.
Crowds of bnlf-stsrved people at some
of tbe stations were risking for bread
for their families and neighbors. We
bear of more tbsu two hundred vic
tims already buried, and morccbarred
and bloated bodies are daily discov
ered. Already more than fifteou hun
dred families are fonnd to bo utterly
destitute aud houseless. They huddle
in barns, in schoolbouses aud iu tboir
neighbors’houses. Scorchod, blinded
and helpless, somo still warnlor, half-
crazed, around tho ruins of their hab
itation^ vainly seeking their dead;
and some, in BpceoldosH agony, nro
wringing their hands aud refitting to
bo comforted. Moro than a thousand
pcoplo, who, only a week ago, occu
pied* happy, comfortable houses, aro
to-day houseless and homeless suffer
ers. They nro hungry and almost
naked when found, and in such num
bers and so widely scattered that our
best efforts and our greatest resources
fail to supply their immediate wants.
Without speedy nid, many will perish,
and many moro will suffer aud bccomo
exiles. Our people will do their utmost
for tboir relief, but all our resources
would fail to meet tboir necessities.
We appeal to tho charit y a ml gener
osity of the American people to send
help without dolny.
Nkw York, Sept. 12.—Tbe Michi
gan firo roliof committee bavo ulrcudy
collected ten thousand dollars, and it
was stated to-day that subscriptions
woro rapidly pouring in.
THIS MORMON NUIHANUIS-
A OUlltOHITY.
The Augusta Chronicle anil Conxti
tulionalu! is certainly outitlod to the
modal for getting out tho biggest
thing in tbo way of a trade issue ever
gotten up iu Georgia. Those of her
contemporaries sink into insignifi
canoe by the sitlo of hers. The issue
in question is sixteen pages, with an
elaborate plau of tbo city and vicinity
together with ail points of interest iu
aud around the city, in addition to
which there are elegant engravings of
tbo principle buildiugs aud streets.
Guiteau, the would-be assassin of
President Garfield, came near haviug
his “light put out” this week by one
of his guard. Sergeant Mason got
tired, *18 be says, “guarding such n
contemptible cur ns Guiteau,” and
sought to got rid of it by means of
hot lead. Tbe ball, however, only
grazed the prisoner’s head, ami he
still lives to meet tbo demands of the
law. Wo guess he thinks his chances
nro pretty slim— if tho law doesu’t
break his neck somebody will shoot
him.
The Chattanooga Time* shows that
if Cob Colo finds bis way to Bruns
wick from tho North and East over
tho Kentucky Ccutrul extended to
Knoxville, he will go to Atlanta via
Cleveland, Dalton and Rome. The
completion of the link from Red Chy
to Ooltcwab will give him on almost
direct traffic line from the Mississippi
river at Memphis via Cbatanooga,
Dalton, Homo, Atlanta, Macon, to
Brunswick harbor. With tho cuu
nections completed this must be one
of tbe finest systems of road in the
country, nod there seems no doubt of
the diiporitlon and ability of tbe syn
dicate to finish their system speedily.
Mrs. Gcorgo Cooper, living on Sev
enth stroct in this city, lias a peach
troo which dosorvos the attention of
horticulturists. Last year it boro two
heavy cropB of fruit, tho first being
largo, fino poaches, aud tho socoud a
tiny edition, cnch peach being not lar
ger than a small plum, but perfoct in
all respects. Mrs. Cooper mado quite
a largo quantity of preserves from tho
socond crop. This year tho tree again
boro two crops similar to those of Inst
year. It is certainly a curiosity.
Tho abovo is from our cstoomed
contemporary, tho Chronicle, and Con-
stitutonalixt*. That is certainly a won
derful tree, but uot such a curiosity
as ono that grew in Tattuall county,
years ago, on tho farm of Mr. C. J.
Fletcher. That troo boro threo crops
the year wo saw it. Tho first crop was
vory largo fruit, tho socond ordinary
sizo, aud tho third crop the sizo of
guinea eggs, aud us sweet as sugar.

The nows from tho wounded Presi
dent continues to bo chocriug. Tbo
move to Long Brauch aud tbo dis
missal of tho bulk of tho doctors has
had a most happy roenlt. He has
been Bitting up of lato iu a reclining
chair aud enjoying tbo viuw out upon
tho ocean. Tbo prosout indications
aro that ho will certainly recover.—
Meanwhile Guiteau lies iu prison a
mark for the guards whenevor ono of
them chooses to try a shot.
Bill Morris, and escaped convict
from tho Atlanta chain gaug, was rc-
captnrod in that city a few days ago.
When searched, this is what was
found on his person: Ouo beautiful
large pearl card case, valued at $50,
one handsome gold broastpin, ono
open-face lady's gold watch, ouo gold
nocklaco and locket, ouc gold nock
chain, ono gold breast pin—hair set,
ono amethyst scarf-pin, ouo pair gold
car-ringB, ono gold pencil and pen
combined, ono diamond car-ring, two
studs, ono coral breastpin, one plain
gold ring - engraved insido, one pearl-
handle pockct-kuifo, one silk faa cord
with silver pendants, two beautiful
<i!h handkerchiefs, two razors, ouc
loublc-caso watch, a beautiful dia
mond cross and a few small rings.
Savannah New*.
Tbo worso class of immigrants that
aro brought to our shores is undoubt
edly tho Mormou contingent, made up
of dupes and devotees from tbe most
ignorant aud degraded of European
populations. Ovor two thousand
have been sent from tbe single port of
Liverpool during the currout year,
I and probably ns many moro have
found tboir way into tbo country un
heralded. If, as is tho fashion of tho
dominant political purty to doclaro,
there is authority resident in tho Fed
eral Government to uproot these pos-
tUout fanatics, and, besides, a design
to accomplish such a purpose, it would
seem to be a stupendous folly to per
mit tho constnnt increase of tbeir
power by foreign and domestic mi
grations. Every year they aro bettor
entrenched in tbeir position. What
ever may bo tbe future policy of tho
Federal Government, there will be
great force in tbe pica, which the
Mormons will inevitably set up, that
they have acquired tboir foothold iu
tho Territories of tho United .States
under tho tacit sanction of our laws,
Whatever may possibly be dono to
ahato this pestilential nuisance should
bo dono promptly.
ROMA NCR OK A LETTKII.

Five years ago a ntaideu fair of a
little town not far from Macon anx
iously awaited an important letter
from her lover who was absent. Tho
letter failed to roach her, and after a
sensou of dc8|K)udency sho married
auothor suitor. Time rolled on and
brought her happiness and two bright
little children. Tho otbor day per
mission was grantod by Captain John
Frey, special agent of tbe postal ser
vice, to tear away some of tbo boards
of a letter case in tho Macon post of-
fico, behind which was supposed to bo
lodged several totters. When tbo
boards were ripped off a letter was
found, |K)st-marked fivo years ago,
addressed to the maiden fair wbo bad
waited in vain for her lover's tender
missive. It was forwarded to her,
and, uo doubt, a retrospective look
brought to rniud that well-used but

How Oota Wilt out Throuh Atlanta,
AUuts CoiiulsUoa.
For some weeks tbe managers bare
been running tinea around and
through Atlanta, searching for a good
route into tbe city for tbe Macon and
Brunswick extension. Several lines
have been ran, nnd much gronnd has
been examined to find a good location.
It baa within the past few days
bocn definitely settled bow tbe road
from Maeon shall enter tbe city. It ia
to come from tbe sontb, crossing Mc
Donough street near tbo Clark Uni
versity, nnd macing nearly to the
comer of Glenn and Hompbris streets,
not far from tbe West End ice facto
ry. It crosses tbo Maeon and West
ern railroad not far from tbe rear of
Dr. W. S. Mitchell’s store, on Peters
street, and follows tbo line of tbo Ma
con and Western road on tbe West
sido to a point nearly opposite tbe
cotton compress. In front of Jodge
Collier’s residence tbo line will run to
Elliott street, and will ran parallel
with Elliott street on tbe east side of
that street from Mitchell street to tbe
depot grounds of the Georgia Pacific.
From tbe depot grounds toward
tbe Chattahoochee river, the right of
way of the Georgia Pacific will be
aped jointly by tbo Georgia and Cin
cinnati and Georgia Pacific. Tbo
Georgia and Cincinnati company bavo
purchased two hundred feet on the
east side of Elliott street from near
Hantor street to tbo depot grounds of
the Georgia Pncifio, giving ample
room for side tracks and depot
grounds.
As soon os tho lino is snrvoycd n

tho ccromony, which, by tho way, took

A correspondent of the Maeon Tei-
epraph thus writes from New York:
On Friday tbe 9tb wo paid n brief
visit to Mr. George I Soncy, tbo great
friend of Georgia educators. It is a
pleasure to look into bis geuial face.
Ho is a plain, unpretending man, who
abowa in hia very conntenanoe that be
is a noble man. Ho is still worried
with letters from Georgia and else
where asking donations. He showed
ns a letter from a lady iu Gonna, ask
ing for money to educate her daugh
ter. He will pay no attention to these
letters. He is doing a great work on
tbo proper line nnd will not be turned
aside from bis plau. People would
save tbomselvo trouble, paper and
postage by ceasing to make these ap
peals. Rest assured they will meet
no favors wbatover. Tbo refusal to
meet these appeals does not at all
change our views of Mr. Scnoy’s lib

liberal he is, to attend to these ap
peals. If bo did, ho would have to re
