On Saturday last the quiet of onr

door aud the usual inqniry of "Is Mr.
Stacy in ?" Being answerod in the
affirmative, tho speaker, a sprightly
little damsel, ontored, followed by a
servant bearing two of tbo biggest
rnta bagn turnips we evor beheld.—
Approaching ns, the little gill said,
“Mr. Stacy, here' are some turnips
auntie sent yon from Satilhi, and she
says sho raised them hertse’f, and that
nuclo Wesley didn't have unytbing
to do with them ” We think "uncle
Wesley" 4 fortunate man to have a
wife who can raise such turnips as
those were without his assistance.—

Tbo writer pi Ibis note has seen on
account in tbo Advertiser of an offi
cial visit by the momber of'Congress
to this harbor for tbe parposo of an
inspection of the government improve
ments now in coarse of construction
for increasing the depth of water in
tbe channel to tbe city wharves. Onr
reading of tbe neconnt disclosed the
fact that a small party was made up,
to accompany Col. Blnek, aud we jfto-
snmod wo sbonld see tbo names of
either or both th_, U. S. engineer and
tbe inepeetor of tho work with them,
with maps and charts to show exactly
tbo location of the wingdoms and the
line of the channel along which dredg'
ing has been done, with an explana
tion of the objects to be attained, and
tbo principles involved in the projeot
for the improvement. Wo were aware
that the snrvey woe made'by the offi
cer now hero in charge, and upon
whose report and rcoommendation
tbe works were undertaken and have
been thne far snocessfully carried on,
hot to our surprise we did not boo tbo
name of the enginoer nor that of tbe
inspector. Who made the explana
tion? Wp thought of monyoitizone
who might hove guessed at what was
done and to bo done,' but it never oc
curred to ns that such a party as we
saw named could have undertaken to
enlighten Congrese upon, a harbor
improvement. Did Col. fBUek go
away fully improesod with tho magni
tude of tbe work to bo done, and that
tho particular plan of improvement
bad been wisely chosen?
Our harbor and its proper improve
ment, in view of Its importance in tbe
early future as a first-class shipping
point, ns tbe torminns of two great
lines of railway to tbo intorior, wonld
seem to domand something more than
a pleasure party'if facts and figures
wore desired by tho people, who were
to be represented in the national
conncl). Just sneh an inspection has
ruined many a good plan for improv
ing onr Southern water courses.—
