THE LOCUSTS.
In o talk with Mr. Scelpert, of
Albany, tlio other day l;u said that
tho looiiRts now croating so much
talk throughout the South wero
tho real aoventeon-vear locusts—
us ovidonccd by the W on the
wings and the red color of the
eyes.
He remembered distinctly the
last visit of these locusts, which he
says occurred fourteen years ago.
He says that there is no danger to
growing crops from these insects,
but they destroy thousands of fruit
and forest trees. Their habits are
curious. The female fixes herself
on the small limb of a tree and cuts
a small cavity beneuth the hurk into
which she lays her oggs. When
the eggs are hatched the grub de
liberately drops to the "ground and
digs into it. He burrows until ho
lias reached the end of a rootlet of
the tree,. He fastens to this and
for thirteen years lives under*
ground tucking the sap from the
root of the tree. At the end of
thirteen to fifteen years, he emerges
from the ground, his hack splits
open, wiugt make their appear*
ance, and he is then a locust and
in for six week’s of summer holiday.
The male does the humming and
the female puts a new stock ot
eggs under the hark of the tree*.
Mr. Schclpert says that little
damage to trees nmy be looked for
tliis year, bnt for tho noxt few
years we will sec hundreds of trees
dying without any disernible cause.
This will be the work of the grubs
of this year’s crop of locusts—eat
ing the life out of the trees under*
ground. In remaining in a “grub”
state for thirteen years the locust
is phenomena), the largest period
of “grubdom” for any other insect
being six years—for tho stag-bee
tle.
The most remarkable story about
locusts is credited to Dr. Tom Gor
don, A few days since a young
girl was hanging clothes ou a line
in a country yard near the city.
Just as she threw a shoot over the
line, she fell to the ground and
screamed. Her mother ami aunt
hurried out to her, and found a
locust clinging to her left temple,
they pulled the insect away from
her face, lifted her up and carried
her into the house. Dr. Gordon
found that her entire left side was
parulyzod, and on the next day the
paralysis had covered the entire
body—the pulse being scarcely
perceptible. On Sunday it was
thought the girl would die. Bill
Moore, of the Augusta News, who
had this story from Dr. Gordon
aaya that at (he last visitation of
the locusts, he knew two similar
cases. This is the first that has
ever come to our knowledge.
Roscob Conk ling made a big mis
take in his efforts to control the
President and also the United States
fisnate. He sees his error now when
it is too late to remedy the rash act,
and our presumption is that he will
. hare plenty of time to repent it in
the future. The President iiad a
perfect right to nominate Mr. Ro
berson, and it was Mr. Conkling’s
privilege to show cause, if he could,
before the Senate, why Roberson
should not be confirmed by that
body. He was no iurther responsi
ble. This was his whole duty and
nothing more. As to his prospects
hereafter he may practice his profes
sion, but we never expect him to he
elected to a seat ia tho Senate again.
“I see that ex*President Grant’s
friends hare raised 250,000 for him.
My address is Fremont Ohio.”—R.
B. Hayes.

Tho Asylum Question.
No Georgian in distress ever np-
pealod to' his mother’* heart in
vain. Grand and glorious us is tier
record, brightly ns shines her his
tory, no gem in her coronet scintil
ntes with a purer, clearer and more
brilliant light than that which com
mousurates her noble charities, and
her sons and daughters in misfort
une. Her educational institution*
everywhere lure her sons and
daughters on to fame, ller in
stitution for the deaf and dumb has
made light and joyous the lives of
hundreds who have never heard
sweet music nor spoken to thoir
fellows iii their mother tongue.
Hor institution for the blind ha*
opened the darkened windows of
hundreds ol souls, and though no
sunlight of Heaven streams in
through the cui'tainod casements
of their physical temples, the
brighter sunburst of wisdom lias
flooded their souls with a purer
light that no passing cloud ob
scure*. In the years gone by the
unfortunates bereft of reason have
found a tender home and gentlest
soothing beneath the fostering
shelter of charities’ wing, uud thi*
saddest of all human conditions,
this ntute worse tliun death has
been robbed of half its horror.
Rut much as she has done in the
past, still more is demanded by thu
exigencies of the present, and the
prospective necessities of the fut
ure. Already the wulls of the tu
hie institution, the grandest monu
ment of her HWcet charity, lire over
crowded hy the unfortunate class
tor whom it was erected. Nay
more, tlio goal walls or noutiy or
Quito hall the counties in the state
are vocal with the piteous cries for
deliverance, tor help, for treatment
for the mind malady that is only
aggravated and increased hy such
an incarceration.
We arc suro no argument is need
ed on this subject. We are con
vinced that‘to let tho Geoigia leg
islature once grasp the facts in the
case in all their harrowing details,
is to uring swift and certain an
swer in the shape of liberal appro
priations forward the wory which

AM EDITOR’S DREAM.
The editor fell asleep after a time,
and lo f he dreamed a dresm. And it
seemed to him that, having armed
himself with certain papers and books
he turned his steps ot ce more to
neaven and knocked at the gate.
‘Hello 1 ia that you again ? What
do you wish ?’ said Peter.
•Let those persons again como
forth,’replied the alitor; and Peter
made them all pass through the gate
and stand outside.
They oame as before and uttered
the same ci ies as before.
‘Why didn’t you notice the big egg
I sent you ?’ yelled the first.
,It was rotten !’ replied-the editor.
‘Why didn’t you write up my soda
fountain ?’ said the druggist.
‘You had your tickets printed at
another offloe,’calmly replied the lo-
oal man.
, Why did yon write about old Tom
linson’s bens, and never speak of my
new gate P’ shouted a third.
‘Old Tomlinson paid for his adver
tising, and you didn’t. Here’s the
bill’, said the editor.
‘Why did you spell my name wrong
in the programme ?* said the local
talent.
‘'lake a look at your manuscript
and see for yourself,’ replied the edi
tor, with a grim smile.
The rest of the company yelled
out their complaints in unison, uud
the editor calmly sorted out a pile of
bills for unpaid subscriptions and
presented each with one; and it wus
so when they received them they all
tore their hair and rushed violently
down a steep place to the sea; and
St. Peter, calmly taking the editor
by the hnud, led him within the gate,
and said:
‘Gome friend; these chaps tnun-
aged to slip through here iu spite of

as to the time of the election. It

day of this month, und at least one

The Covington Star says iu regard
to the locusts: “We see the locusts
ure appealing in s -ctions of me Stale,
and that no little alarm prevails on
account of their coming. The idea
seems to prevail that they will eat
vveiythiug green coming in their way
Now those who are thus alarmed
may possibly be iu danger of being
devoured on the ground, but we as
sure all such persons there is no need
of alarm on account of the vegeta
tion. Locusts never destroy any
thing. Tney may come in myriads,
but they will not destroy the vegeta
tion. They come quietly and mys
teriously, und they disappear in the
same way. The grasshopper is the
party who destroys the vegetation,
but the locusts destroy nothing.
Therefore, no alarm need be felt ou
account ot the coming locusts.

the top of her head, and lodging in
the door facing. When the daugh

her desite of killing her mother she
tried the oilier barrel, but her little

to save It id mother’s life. When Mr.
